Ⅰ. Course Overview

1. Description

This course focuses on the global business environment in which Multinational Corporations (MNCs)
operate. The economic, social-cultural, political and regulatory dimensions of the international business
environment are analysed. International trade & Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), regional economic
integration, global money market, and globalisation of business and markets are examined.

2. Prerequisites

There is no prerequisite for taking this course.

Ⅱ. Course Objectives

Learning goal of this course is to help students develop a well-rounded global perspective.
More specifically, at the end of semester, students should be able to:
1. Understand what International Business (IB) is all about
2. Apply the concepts and tools in IB to a real company example
3. Cultivate their global perspectives.

Ⅲ. Course Format
This is a seminar style course in which the participating students are required to study the assigned text
and cases, and analyze and discuss them with the rest of class. Class participation is very important as it
is a sure way of communicating your level of participation for the day’s material.

Part I: Lecture

We start with some seminar style classes in Weeks 1 to 12 to provide students with the necessary tools
for firm, industry and country analysis with respect to International Business (IB). The content of the
class will be conveyed through a mix of lectures, videos, and discussions.

Part II: Presentation

Group case presentation will take place in Weeks 13 and 14. A business environment analysis is an
integral part of a course in IB. The purpose of a group project is to provide students with experience of
the international business problems faced by a real company.

Ⅳ. Course Requirements and Grading Criteria

* The purpose of the group case presentation is to provide students with an opportunity to do a
comprehensive international business environment analysis for a real company. Through active
participation you should be able to learn i) how to analyze a case, ii) how to collect information about a
country and its business environment, and iii) how to structure and present their ideas.

The content of the presentation should include, but not limited to:
1) Country environmental analysis

- geography, population, history…


- political economy (political, economic & legal systems)
- economic indicators (GDP, Export, Import) & main industries
- social norms & cultures (language, religion, ethnic groups…)
2) Business environment analysis (from a MNC’s perspective)

3) Company (industry) case or example

4) Strategic evaluations and recommendations, based on your analysis
