Monochromatic Emission in Radiation Transfer

The document contains 7 questions about radiation heat transfer and blackbody radiation. Question 1 asks about the body that will emit more radiation at a shorter wavelength between two bodies at different temperatures. Question 2 asks about calculating the surface temperature of the sun treating it as a blackbody. Question 3 asks about calculating the surface temperature and monochromatic emissive power of the sun using its maximum radiation wavelength. Question 4 asks about calculating various radiation properties for a body at a given temperature and area.

1. Let us assume two identical bodies, one body is at a temperature of 13000C and other is at 18000C.
At Shorter wavelength which body will emit more radiation.

2. The earth receives at its surface radiation from the sun at the rate of 1400 W/m2. The distance of
centre of sun from the surface of earth is 1.5 × 108 m and the radius of sun is 7.0 × 108 m. What is
approximately the surface temperature of the sun treating the sun as a black body?

3. The sun emits maximum radiation at λ = 0.52 μ. Assuming the sun to be a black body, calculate the
surface temperature of the sun. Also calculate the monochromatic emissive power of the sun’s
surface

4. The effective temperature of a body having an area of 0.12m2 is 5270C. Calculate the following
(i)The total rate of energy emission
(ii) The intensity of normal radiation
(iii) The wavelength of maximum monochromatic emissive power

5. The filament of a 65 W light bulb may be considered as a black body radiating into a black enclosure
at 700C. The filament diameter is 0.10 mm and length is 5 cm. considering the radiation. Determine
the filament temperature.

6. A spherical aluminium shell of inside radius 1 m is evacuated and used as a radiation test chamber. If
the inner surface is coated with carbon black and maintained at 3270C. Determine the irradiation on
a small test surface placed inside the chamber.

7. A large spherical enclosure has a small opening. The rate of emission of radiative flux through this
opening is 7.35 kW/m2. The temperature at the inner surface of the sphere will be about (assume
Stefan Boltzmann constants σ = 5.67 × 10-8 W/m2 K4)
