Questions

1. Gender is described as an individual status or characteristics of being male or female.

It is defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as the characteristics of women and

men that are socially constructed, and they include the relationships of and those that exist

between men and women, roles, and norms (Sharp et al., 2018). Gender is a social construct

that is unique in different societies depending on the roles and duties that are assigned to

every group. The delivery of care is associated with significant influence from gender due to

the presence of gender inequalities that favor one group from the other in delivering health

policy or intervention. The concept of gender influences the health of a person throughout

his/her life based on relations, roles, and norms (Hammarström & Hensing, 2018). It has

significant impacts on health promotion, for instance, gender impact on the health-seeking

and the risk-taking behaviors of a person, vulnerability to diseases, and being exposed to

certain health risks.

Furthermore, gender influences health promotion through the empowerment of people

towards health improvement. Gender defines the intersection with other factors that cause

marginalization and discrimination like sexual orientation, age, disability, ethnicity,

geographic location, socioeconomic status, and many others (Sharp et al., 2018). the use of

health promotion in delivering health for all faces a challenge of gender-related health

concerns and norms that are linked to poor health outcomes. The traditional gender values of

men make them vulnerable to different diseases and may be rigid in seeking health care when

highly needed (Hammarström & Hensing, 2018). Women also face challenges of stigma and

discrimination in society, thus facing higher health risks.

2. Yoga is described as a systemic practice that entails positive thinking and

meditation, relaxation, doing physical exercise, and control of breath done towards the

development of harmony in the mind, body, and environment. Most often, yoga is considered

to be placing oneself in physical positions/poses, but it involves more like breathing

techniques, meditation, postures, low-impact activity, and relaxation (Shroff & Asgarpour,

2017). Yoga has various health benefits like being a complementary treatment for diseases

such as cancers, coronary heart disease, anxiety disorders, and depression, treatment

programs for substance abuse, and being applied in health promotion programs (Hartley &

Henderson, 2018). The populations that are well-suited for yoga are the young and old adults.

This is because these individuals face a lot of health challenges, stress, and other chronic

diseases.

Young adults face issues of lifestyle diseases and increased psychological disorders

pushing them to resort to substance use and alcoholism due to life challenges. These

individuals need to do more of meditation, relaxation, physical and mental exercise, and

maintaining specific postures all achieved through yoga (Hartley & Henderson, 2018). They

need to overcome these challenges in their life to prevent deteriorated health. Moreover, older

adults are faced with issues of the weak immune system, increased life challenges like family

feuds, homelessness, tough economic situations, and others, thus making them stressful with

different health complications like cancers, diabetes, and many others (Shroff & Asgarpour,

2017). These people will benefit from yoga to improve their flexibility, build muscle strength,

perfects one’s posture, protect the spine, prevent joint and cartilage breakdown, and drains

the lymph and boost their immunity.

Critical Response #3 (Coronavirus)

The film captures the desperate situation in Wuhan associated with the outbreak of a

disease (COVID-19) caused by a coronavirus that was newly discovered in the region. The

outbreak of the disease led to the introduction of a de-facto quarantine state that attempted to

reduce the prevalence and spread of the disease. According to the film, the outbreak is

reported to have originated from the seafood market in Wuhan, where there is illegal trading

of rabbits, birds, snakes, bats, marmots, and other wild animals. It is indicated that the

coronaviruses jumped from wild animals and infected humans and spread through human

contact. However, the documentary illustrates that it is still unknown how the virus spread to

humans from animals.

The new coronavirus is described as a disease of the respiratory system that spreads

from direct contact with the objects or surfaces that have been contaminated. The film shows

that it is transmitted primarily through droplets that result when a person infected with the

virus sneezes or coughs, or through discharge from the nose, or droplets of saliva (Desai &

Patel, 2020). Therefore, the forceful lockdown imposed in the affected countries around the

world is to curb the spread of the virus.

Being a Public Health Promotion Specialist, I would first respond by closing the market

of wild animals operating illegally in Wuhan. It is illustrated in the documentary that the

market is filthy, and the virus might have passed from animals to humans. Additionally,

thorough cleanliness should be carried out in all of the Wuhan regions, including other

regions and nations, to promote a clean environment (Mazumder et al., 2020). I would also

recommend frequent hand sanitation with alcoholic-based hand-rub or washing them with

soap and running water to prevent contact with germs.

Critical Response #4 (Yoga Inc.)

Yes, yoga will survive the present debate that is happening between the sacred and the

profane with its good karma intact. Each side of the argument is beneficial, according to the

teachers and the specialists of yoga. The sacred part of yoga makes one promote a posture of

meditation to reach out to his/her inner being, thus promoting awareness and a positive mood.

It is an approach to reaching one’s heart and their needs with emotional satisfaction (Shroff &

Asgarpour, 2017). Additionally, the profane part of yoga involves cursing when doing the

activity. The approach is also termed as ‘Rage Yoga,’ where an individual curses and screams

while doing yoga.

The practice helps release anxiety, stress, and tension. In health promotion, the sacred

side of yoga is essential since it promotes calmness and relaxation of an individual. It allows

him/her to foster a positive attitude that is beneficial in promoting positive well-being

through one’s emotions. More so, the profane side of yoga encourages relaxation, eases

tension, stress, and anxiety, thus reducing individual risk to ill health like depression and

other emotional disorders (Hartley & Henderson, 2018). Yoga is therefore essential in

promoting positive health.
