Effective Width Calculation for Flanges

The document summarizes the geometrical data and grillage idealization for analyzing a bridge structure. It provides: 1) Cross section dimensions for the girders and diaphragms. 2) A formula and calculations for determining the effective width of compression flanges on the outer and inner girders. 3) A grillage model showing the idealization of the bridge as line elements connected at nodes, with the calculated effective widths.

Effective width for compression flanges

beff = bw + ∑beff,i
beff = effective width of compression flange
bw = thickness of the web
beff,i = (0.2 bi + 0.1 l0) ≤ 0.2 l0 & ≤ bi
bi = half the clear distance between webs of bay i
l0 = the distance between points of zero moments, generally 0.7 times eff. span

1) Outer Girder :
bw = 0.5 m
l0 = 11.214 m
beff,1 = (0.2 b1 + 0.1 l0) ≤ 0.2 l0 i.e. 2.2428 m & ≤ b1 i.e. 1.00 m
beff,1 = 1.322 m
Therefore beff,1 is 1.00 m
beff,2 = (0.2 b2 + 0.1 l0) ≤ 0.2 l0 i.e. 2.2428 m & ≤ b2 i.e. 1.10 m
beff,2 = 1.342 m
Therefore beff,2 is 1.10 m

beff = 2.60 m

2) Inner Girder :
bw = 0.5 m
l0 = 11.214 m
beff,1 = (0.2 b1 + 0.1 l0) ≤ 0.2 l0 i.e. 2.2428 m & ≤ b1 i.e. 1.10 m
beff,1 = 1.342 m
Therefore beff,1 is 1.10 m
beff,2 = (0.2 b2 + 0.1 l0) ≤ 0.2 l0 i.e. 2.2428 m & ≤ b2 i.e. 1.10 m
beff,2 = 1.342 m
Therefore beff,2 is 1.10 m

beff = 2.70 m
