3 Community Demographics
2.2.13 Analyze the community’s shifting demographics, and recommend
ways that the education system can respond.

Demographics are information about the population and the varying groups within it.

This can relate to race, religion, sex, income, status, neighborhood, geography. Demographics

are a very important piece of schools and affect the school district in many ways. Schools need to

pay close attention to their changing demographics in order to make appropriate changes to their

school system.

Olentangy is one of the highest rated districts in the state of Ohio. They have a population

of 20,977 but they are still growing rapidly. While a majority of the population is white (75%),

there are multiple different nationalities and races throughout the district including hispanic

(3%), Asian (13%), Black (4%), American Indian (1%), Hawaiian Native (1%), and a mix of

two or more races (4%). Olentangy has a pretty low poverty rate at only six percent and the

district is pretty even between girls (forty-nine percent) and boys (fifty-one percent) (Evidence

2.3.1). A problem that Olentangy is currently facing is population. Their population is increasing

so quickly that they do not have enough space in schools anymore (Evidence 2.3.2). A way the

district is handling it is building new schools. Recently, they opened Berlin High School and

now they are trying to pass a levy to get new elementary and middle schools.

Westerville City Schools is rated as an average school district. While still a majority of

their population is white (56%), you will see more diversity within this school district.

Westerville has a slightly larger poverty rate sitting at around thirty four percent (Evidence

2.3.3). Their district has the same boy to girl ratio as Olentangy which is forty-nine percent girls
and fifty one percent boys. Westerville schools are also struggling with enrollment numbers and

also built a school last year to combat that (Evidence 2.3.4).

Columbus City Public Schools are rated as a below average school district. The majority

of the students that attend are black but you will see larger numbers of other races within the

district also. Sixteen percent of their student population are currently learning the english

language (Evidence 2.3.5). Poverty levels in Columbus City are at seventy nine percent. Their

district also has the same ratio of boys to girls as the other two districts. Columbus City Schools

need to find a way to get more money from the state in order to get new ways for students to

learn and additional resources like laptops and online applications.

While Olentangy is the highest rated district between the three, it has the least diversity.

Columbus City Public Schools surpassed the other two districts with lots more diversity and

higher poverty rates. They also have a higher rate of kids who are learning the english language.

Both Olentangy and Westerville are struggling with overcrowding and having additional schools

built.
