About SM Cares
● A division of SM Foundation Inc. that handles the Corporate Social
Responsibility programs of SM Prime Holdings, Inc.
● Launched in 2004
● Has programs on persons with disabilities, children & youth development,
women and breastfeeding mothers, senior citizens, overseas filipino workers
and environment sustainability
People and the Community
● Persons with Disabilities
○ Barrier-free and disability inclusive environment
○ Promote awareness, acceptance and inclusion
○ Happy Walk for Down Syndrome, Special Movie Screening for the Blind and Deaf
● Children Youth Development
○ Drink for Two - Project W.A.S.H. (water, sanitation and hygiene)

Programs for Disaster Resilience
● Structures
○ SM designs and builds disaster resilient structures with green features to
withstand the effects of calamities, and support the global goal for sustainable
development.
○ Six environmental aspects to advance sustainability—energy efficiency, water
consumption, air quality, biodiversity, waste management, and greenhouse gas
emissions.
○ SM City Marikina and SM City Muntinlupa
■ managed to prevent severe damage that could have affected the lives and
businesses of more than 1,400 mall employees, affiliates and agency
personnel
Programs for Disaster Resilience
● Communities
○ Built 1,000 disaster-resilient homes for the families who were affected by Typhoon
Haiyan
○ To enable a sustained community after the families have moved in their new
houses, SM has engaged the services of non-government organizations that are
assigned in each village.

Green Campaigns
● Trash to Cash program
○ exchange their recyclable materials for cash and other household items.
○ The program has resulted to an exchange amounting to about PHP 47 million worth of
recycled goods
● Green Retail Agenda
○ This event is conducted for the network of SM Prime’s mall tenants, public and private sector
business partners, to educate the audience on pressing environmental concerns.
● Green Film Festival
○ Free film showing of environmentally-relevant films
Issues
● Deforestation issue where trees in Baguio got cut overnight when Pope
Francis visited
○ Baguio Regional Trial Court issued a temporary environmental protection order in April then
dismissed in December 2012
● Manila Bay’s water was also polluted by SM
○ Does not have STP (Sewage Treatment Plants)
Conclusions and Recommendations
● SM Cares is an external type of social enterprise
● They were able to provide numerous CSR activities and programs that are
sustainable and beneficial to a large amount of people
● However, some of SM’s projects and infrastructures went through unethical
measures
○ Mostly environmental related
Conclusions and Recommendations
● SM’s business decisions and/or implementation of new projects must
ALWAYS be in line with their Code of Ethics
● Focus on environmentally-friendly projects or activities
● Frequency of CSR activities to be increased per year instead of programs
done only once a year
