Is a short popular saying, usually of unknown and ancient origin, that
expresses effectively some commonplace truth or useful thought.
1. CURIOSITY KILLED THE CAT
Said to warn someone not to ask too many
question about something
Too much curiosity can lead to dangerous
situations
Example:
When he started asking too many questions of his
neighbours about their whereabouts during the
weekend, they warned him that curiosity killed the
cat.
Joe was very curious about where Sarah was getting all her money from, but all
she said was that curiosity killed the cat.
2. DON’T PUT ALL YOUR EGGS
IN ONE BASKET
Don’t put all your resources into one
proyect or plan
Example:
I have invested my money in 5 different
companies because i don’t want to have all my
eggs in one basket
3. DON’T COUNT YOUR CHICKEN
BEFORE THEY HATCH
To start making plans about something that
is based on something in the future which
may or may not happen
Example:
I had told him to not count his chickens before they hatch. Now he regrets
paying the down payment on the car that he is no longer able to afford.
4. CROSS THE BRIDGE WHEN YOU
COME TO IT
Resolve a problem when it occur, rather than try to
solve it in advance
Example:
The student wanted to think about failing the exam
only after the results came out. He wanted to cross
the bridge only when it came to it.
5. EVERY CLOUD HAS A SILVER
LINING
Very negative occurrence has a positive aspect to it
Example:
I know that you job is not going well and you are stressed
out, but don’t worry, things will be better soon. Every
cloud has a silver lining.
6. BETTER LATE THAN NEVER
It is better to do something late than to not/never
do it at all
Example:
All of us have been waiting for you for two hours
– but better late than never.
7. A PICTURE IS WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS/
PICTURE PAINTS A THOUSAND WORDS
A picture conveys information more
effectively than words
