Understanding Oscilloscope Basics

In this experiment, students used an oscilloscope to observe waveforms from a multi-tap transformer and audio frequency generator. They found that voltage measured was directly proportional to peak voltage from the transformer. When setting frequencies on the generator, students could measure the period of the wave and calculate the frequency using the inverse relationship between period and frequency. Overall, the oscilloscope allowed students to visually analyze waveforms and complete the objectives of learning how to properly operate and apply the instrument.

Discussion:

In this experiment we used the Wheeler WOS 6502 Oscilloscope. At first sight, the
Oscilloscope looks intimidating. It looks hard to use and to read. But as the experiment
progresses and with the help of our instructor, it became satisfying to use. As the laboratory
manuals say, Oscilloscopes are used to display waveforms in a two-dimensional format. The
scope's horizontal axis is used as a time axis, and the vertical axis is usually utilized to plot
the incoming voltage. We did two activities in this experiment. As for the first results, using
the multi-tap transformer, we observed that the Vrms are directly proportional to the Vpeak
as we connect the oscilloscope probes to each of the different transformer terminals. And for
the second activity, we used an AF Generator. We observed that when we set a specified
audio frequency on the AF Generator, we can measure the period of the wave. Also, using
the measured period of the wave, we can get its calculated frequency using the formula 1/t.
The period of frequency is inversely proportional to the calculated frequency.

Conclusion:

In this lab experiment, we used the Oscilloscope to learn how to measure the peak voltage
and the period of a waveform. The Oscilloscope let us see and enabled us to manipulate the
waveform to acquire values of different settings. We slowly figured out how to properly use
it and how each knob affects the appearance of the waveform. We completed our objectives
in this lab by learning the principles of application and operation of the Oscilloscope.
