It is very important to listen carefully when conducting a reference check. Questions should be formulated to
clarify comments or to pursue an area introduced by the person. Often, what is not said is more important than
what is said. Listen for lack of positive descriptive words when describing the applicant, how the work is done and
the applicant’s relationship with others.
