CHAPTER I
PROJECT LOCATION AND DESIGN BUILDING ORIENTATION
Introduction
Air-conditioning is the control of temperature, humidity, purity, and motion
of air in an enclosed space, independent of outside conditions. It is the process
of treating air, to control simultaneously its temperature, humidity, cleanliness
and distribution to meet the requirements of the space to be conditioned.
Continual advances and development in medicine and technology facilities
and hospitals have grown in the country as of today. The importance of need for
constant evaluation of air conditioning needs in this hospitals and medical
facilities has been vital for better patient care.
Particularly, a Cancer building was proposed in Batangas City to provide
medical services to the citizen of the city. The three storey building construction
is located at Batangas Medical Center, Kumintang Batangas City. Installing air
conditioning unit will provide a comfortable environment to its patients. Doctors
and staff will also be able to work more comfortably and concentrate on their duty
in a better manner.
The need to restrict air movement is considered within various
departments. The specific requirements for ventilation and filtration is also
thought about carefully to dilute and remove contaminants in the form of airborne
microorganisms, viruses, odour, hazardous chemicals and radioactive
substances. There are also various areas in the building that have different types
of temperature and humidity requirements. Proper air conditioning design of the
hospital will permit accurate control of environmental conditions and proper
control of air quality and air movement.
Objectives of the Design
This design project is principally concerned to design an air conditioning
system of the proposed Cancer Building located in Batangas Medical Center,
Kumintang Ibaba, Batangas City.
Specifically, this study aims to:
1. Identify the climatic condition, building orientation, and building
components as well as the materials of construction and all factors that
contributes to the cooling space.
2. Calculate the building cooling loads using the different procedures laid
in ASHRAE Data Guide Book with the selected outdoor and indoor
design conditions at the block load maximum peak hour of the day.
The calculation consist of:
2.1. external load;
2.2. internal load.
3. Present the psychrometric calculation for equipment selection.
4. Select an A/C unit from the available catalogue with respect to the
required cooling load.
5. Design for an appropriate air conditioning system.
Significance of the Design Project
This study will focus on the design of an air conditioning system. This
study would benefit the following:
To the proposed Cancer Building of Batangas Medical Center, Kumintang
Ibaba, Batangas City, this study will serve as a basis for the development of their
air conditioning system.
To Batangas State University, this study will provide a deeper
understanding and appreciation in designing A/C systems
To the researcher, this design project will provide significant knowledge,
as it allows them to apply the theories and concepts in the field of engineering
that will subsequently be encountered in their field of expertise.
Lastly, to the future researchers, this study will provide basis for future
design project
