An Essay Regarding I, Robot

What would happen if humans created advanced artificial intelligence? Would these machines
become sentient in the future and ignore all commands? What would they do to their creators? Where
would they go next? Would they ignore or hurt humans? These questions popped into my mind when I
watched I, Robot for the first time.

The move posed many questions for me to ponder upon. It raised many points that were not
only about technology, but also with people's decisions. What would happen if robots managed to have
free will? This basically happened in the movie and made me very curious. Thus, I will share my
reflections about the movie in the succeeding paragraphs.

In the movie, robots were part of humans' everyday lives; they became workers, assistants, and
guardians for people. However, a newer generation of robots turned on their own masters that were
humans. This is already a violation of one of the many concepts of computer ethics. Artificial intelligence
must be closely monitored since computers are tasked with the functions of humans. One small mistake
of these programs and the programmer is to be blamed. The robots that turned sentient already made
me worried for what else the future of technology holds for us. I only hope that our current
programmers do not violate this concept of computer ethics.

I mentioned that the newer generation of robots in the movie turned on their masters for a
short while. One such scene in the movie had a robot disabling an urgent phone call from the
protagonists. This is another violation of one of the concept of computer ethics. Privacy is very
important since we need to control what others know about us. A violation of this standard would be
catastrophic, especially for people who own large corporations and have many trade secrets. I think that
this is the number one concept regarding computer ethics. The privacy of another person should not be
breached if one is unauthorized to do so.

I, Robot was a very interesting film. It raised many questions about the advancing artificial
intelligence and the threats that it can pose to computer ethics. Computer ethics is a very serious matter
especially in today's modern world, and I hope that artificial intelligence and people themselves always
adhere to its concepts.
