Integration by Parts: xe^2x Integral

The document provides steps to solve the integral ∫(xe^x)(xe^x) dx. It first expands the expression to x^2e^2x. It then uses integration by parts twice to solve the integral, obtaining the solution x^2e^2x/2 - xe^2x/2 + 1/4e^2x + C.

Exercise: Solve the following integral

xex xex dx

First we need to expand the expression to get an easier integral to solve

Expanding the expression xe x xe x   x 2 e 2x

So the integral is...

 x 2 e 2x dx

The integral will be solved with the Method of Integration by Parts

Following the ILATE o DETAIL rule to choose "u" and "dv"

u  x2 dv  e 2x dx
du  2xdx v  12 e 2x

Now we apply the Integration by parts formula

 udv  uv   vdu

  x 2 e 2x dx  x 2 e 2x
2
 2xe 2x
2
dx

Simplifying the second integral

  xe 2x dx

It's another product so, we need to apply integration by parts a second time

wx dz  e2x dx
dw  dx z  12 e 2x

Applying the formula

  xe2   12 e 2x dx   xe2   e2x dx

2x 2x
1
2

The last integral is immediate, so the final solution after collecting the results in
intermediate steps is

x 2 e 2x xe 2x
 2
 2
 14 e 2x  C
