INTRODUCTION:
National Service Training Program or simply as NSTP, it aims to promote and integrate
values education, transformational leadership, spirit of patriotism and nationalism and
sustainable social mobilization for youth development, community building and national
security.
The National Service Training Program Law is geared toward enhancing civic
consciousness and defense preparedness in the youth by developing in them the ethics of service
and patriotism while undergoing training in any of the three program components, Reserve
Officers' Training Corps (ROTC); Civic Welfare Training Service (CWTS); and (c) Literacy
Training Service (LTS). National Service doesn't just signify "serving the general population"; it
implies serving people in general under specific political and financial foundations; it implies
serving the country during a time of patriotism; and it implies building the patriotism which it
serves (Gorham, 1992). It is rehearsed in numerous nations all around the world. These national
services might be as military, nonmilitary administrations, non-military mandatory projects, and
some even incorporated in the instructive framework like in the Philippines as the National
Service Training Program (NSTP). These sorts of national service, which are incorporated with
the instructive frameworks of every nation, are types of service learning.
Service-learning might be characterized as a methodology coordinating network services
with guidance to apply what understudies have realized inside the study hall to this present
reality setting to concretize learning and to reinforce city and network duties. Service learning is
about hands-on cooperation in network-based ventures. Considering Edgar Dale's Cone of
Experience, the best strategies include immediate, deliberate learning encounters, for example,
hands-on or field encounters (Anderson, n. d.). This emphasizes gaining as a matter of fact has a
more prominent impact or effect on the lives of the understudies
There are a few examinations directed in different nations about the effects of service
learning to the understudies. The discoveries of these investigations uncovered that the effects
might be seen on their scholastic, urban or citizenship, and social or individual viewpoints.
Furco's examination (2002) indicated that the administration learning bunch scored higher on
every scholarly measure however the main factually critical contrasts were between the service
learning and the no service gathering. National Service Knowledge Network uncovered that the
understudies who took part in the service learning were seen as more subjectively drew in and
increasingly persuaded to learn. In psychological areas, preparing improves the nature of
reasoning and it includes critical thinking, basic leadership, and clarification to accomplish
objectives [Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development (AIBD), 2012].
Studies show extraordinary guarantee for administration learning as a road for expanding
accomplishment among elective school understudies and different understudies considered in
danger of school disappointment. Morgan and Streb's study (2001) showed that service-learning
ventures with understudy initiative can help improve understudies’ residents. Moreover, as
expressed in the exploration directed by Ammon, et al. (2001), the distinctions in sway were
ascribed to contrasts in automatic objectives; divergence in the manners by which dispositions
changed; the manners by which past help encounters were connected to community commitment;
and the distinctions in understudy pondering great citizenship. A hypothesis that will bolster this
is the Gestalt hypothesis which invigorates learning as understanding and the experience as a
wellspring of learning (Lucas and Corpuz, 2011) in light of the fact that the contention of
Ammon, et al. (2001) with respect to the effect of service inside and outside their classroom,
figuring out how to the understudies talked about the experiential learning of the understudies
and how they gained from their encounters of administration learning. In conclusion, the creators
of the examination on the effects on change to adulthood (Martin, Neal, Kielsmeier, and
Crossley, 2006), found that when contrasted with youngsters who were engaged with service just
encounters, understudies who partook in service learning announced progressively beneficial
outcomes in their capacity to help other people, function admirably with others, regard others,
and see the world from different points of view. Service-learning members noted expanded
aptitudes in correspondence, an uplifted feeling of fearlessness, and greater affectability to
contrasts in age, race, and monetary status.
The National Service Training Program is a help rendered to one's own nation with its
point of improving city consciousness and resistance readiness in the young by building up the
morals of administration and nationalism while experiencing preparing in any of its three (3)
program parts in the Philippines. Coming up next are the segments of NSTP which are
extraordinarily intended to upgrade the adolescent's dynamic commitment to the general welfare.
LEARNINGS INSIDE THE CLASSROOM:
In terms of learning inside the classroom during the NSTP hours there are a lot of things
that we as a student can discover. This subject teaches us on how to be a good Filipino citizen.
Being a good Filipino citizen means being the one who plays an active and intelligent role as a
member of the community, he/she is one who fulfills his duties and obligations to the
government
and society, he/she possesses the traits of respectfulness, courtesy, and consideration for parents
and elders and for others, observes punctuality, promptness, and good moral conduct. (Stigler, &
Brandon, n.d.)
Furthermore, NSTP also creates a significant Filipino value to be fostered on our minds
being God fearing, Compassionate, and Patriotic. First, God fearing is one of the most important
value to nurture about, to put God in the center of our lives and communicate with Him by
means of prayers, we should look at Him as our Ultimate Source of our strength. Also, under this
value we should respect for life, because the most precious gift that we received from God is our
“life”; therefore, we should need to treasure it. Next, the act of being compassionate, there is a
saying that love means so much for us, and simply love is the answer to our many questions
during there trying times. It is by love that we learn to care, respect, accept, forgive, and trust.
Lastly, being patriotic, it is all about every person’s sense of duty and responsibility to contribute
to the development of our country, protecting our integrity and upholding the rights and dignity
of our people. In this last value it also builds the sense of Unity, Equality, and Respect for the
Law.
In fact, on our first meeting inside the classroom of our NSTP class, our professor Sir
Velasquez, have given us a task to memorize the 1987 Philippine Constitution and everyone
have been shocked when we here that, because not everyone knows the Constitution. Although,
we didn’t memorize it all perfectly, at least it brings us the fact that we now know on what the
Constitution is all about.
Moreover, we’ve had fun and shared our own experiences through the things that need to
be discussed. As we tackled about leadership, Sir Richard Velasquez, gave us a lecture about the
things that we need to mull over to become an effective leader and a good member. As a leader
you should set your goals and priorities to be able to do all the activities and you must be the one
to guide all your members and being a leader is not just something that we can be overnight.
Being a leader is a commitment to growth, and to willingness to bear the responsibilities
that come with leadership. And as one of the members you should give your cooperation and you
must also give your own decisions in the activity to avoid conflicts and misunderstanding
between the leader and the members.
However, we have learned the importance of Patriotism and Nationalism. Nationalism is
the common bond which holds the people of a nation together. Most people are proud to belong
to a country and are usually prepared to do what they must do to defend it. Patriotism is a love
for one's country and a desire to make her better. Patriotism is very important because it allows
individuals to care about their country. It also allows them to have pride in actions the take and
the decisions they make that are going to affect their Nation. And, I learned the importance of
having a flag to represent one’s nation.
In addition, we’ve partnered ourselves discussing about Good Governance, Disaster
Management and Drug Addiction and Prevention. First, Good Governance is a way of measuring
how public institutions conduct public affairs and manage public resources in a preferred
way. Governance is "the process of decision-making and the process by which decisions are
implemented (or not implemented)". Governance in this context can apply to corporate,
international, national, or local governance as well as the interactions between other sectors of
society. We’ve explored that in reality, Good Governance in our country is not implementing
right as mainly because, on how our government works is not as effective as it must be, there are
many politicians whom are not doing their responsibility at it’s most to serve our country in a
good manner. Next, Disaster Management, for this certain topic we’ve learned that there are two
types of disasters that are happening in our world the Natural Disasters and Human-Made
Disasters. Natural Disasters consists of earthquakes, tsunamis, landslides, typhoons, floods,
drought, and volcanic eruptions. On the other hand, there are also different types of Human-
Made Disasters fire, civil disturbances, war, poverty, bomb threats, air and water pollution, and
industrial accidents. Lastly, about Drug Addiction and Prevention, this is the topic that we are
assigned to report about and give an example about on what is our main understanding about this
topic. It is very important for us to have a better understanding when it comes to Illegal Drugs,
because it will not cause any good for ourselves, instead it will destroy us and our future.
LEARNINGS OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM:
At the same time, in our NSTP classes we do not learn only inside the four edges of our
classroom, we also learn and discover our skills outside of it. Our professor Mr. Velasquez gave
us a task to do something new with the garden of the college building. We have made our plan
and gave it to him, and our first plan has been rejected, because we are not ready with all of the
information that we have to pass, so that all of us gathered and everyone gave their own
suggestions and ideas for the plan to be successful. After hours of planning, finally our plan has
been accepted and to be performed next Saturday. A week after we have gathered all of the
things that we needed, for us to be able to perform the said task, some are assigned to buy the
grass, stones, and paint that will be used, and some are assigned to bring the things that we
needed to bring the plan into a reality. Then, Saturday comes, all of us are doing different tasks
through which our time to finish the work has been lessen, arranging the stones, plowing the
land, planting the plants, painting the stone chairs and tables, cleaning the surroundings of the
garden, and more. All of us did different tasks, for the plan to be completed at a faster rate. After
all the hard work, we manage to finish the entire garden in 4-5 meetings of our NSTP class.
In detail, we can learn and discover new things by doing such tasks outside the
classroom. Here I will emphasize all the things that I have learned during the outside classroom
hours of our NSTP class. In this certain task I have realized that, many of the qualities of being a
leader will be implemented unto us. Communication, this is one of the main reason on why we
have completed this task at a faster pace since, we communicate with each other as brothers and
sisters, to help each other and build a strong relationship for us to better do our plan well.
Flexibility, we know that being flexible is a big part of doing such a huge task, because there are
times that some of us will not be able to attend the class, so the number of members will be
lessen that will cause our task to be delayed, and there the concept of being flexible will go
through. Organization, we must ensure that all the plan is well organized, because if something is
forgotten that can cause a big interruption during the actual implementation of the work being
done. Confidence, of course confidence is also part of doing such task, because if all of the
members of a group is not confident that the task will be done according to the time frame that
we have done, there will be certain times that a group will lose hope, and they will not be able to
be focused of the task that must be done. Teamwork is a big part of doing such big tasks like this
in NSTP class, because we can learn on how to assess things by doing it with coordination and
right communication with other members. Also, we can obtain the sense of “commitment” by
being committed on what we are doing, example in our said task, our block mayor is inspiring us
to do the task in an effective manner so, in that case we are also being committed for what we are
doing. Building a positive relationship with my classmates, it is also a trait that I have explored
through the outside hours in our NSTP class, mainly because we have a sense of communication
to each other, being always attentive on what we are doing, and having courage on doing our
work together. Learn to respect, it is a great virtue of having this trait because respecting others
is just like respecting God, like on our task we have shared each other’s own ideas, and have a
respect for the decisions to be made. Willingness to listen, we as a team must listen for the
instructions of our professor which is a must, because if we do not listen to instructions there is a
big risk of failing on doing the task appropriately. Having a positive personality, having a good
or positive personality to each other is a big key for us to be able to understand each other’s
intention of doing a certain task effectively. Trust, having a trust for your team mates or
members is a must, in order to achieve a certain goal and have a successful outcome for all the
hard work that you and your members have done. Helpful, being helpful during the times of
NSTP class is a great move of being more matured person, in example if there is a member of
your class that is being injured here is the fact that the trait of being helpful will come. Empathy,
being able to “put themselves in other person’s shoes” is a key trait that I have explored during
NSTP, because without empathy in our hearts we can’t build trust to one another, and without
trust, we can’t have the goal of achieving the best effort of doing our work seamlessly.
Showing enthusiasm, as what I have experience outside, we as a group, are being always active,
expressive, and energetic when we are doing our task, I think it is the effect of having a good
communication to each other. Last but not the least is the trait of having “focus”; simply because
without focus on doing our work together there is also a big chance that our plan, will not be
completed or will come into a failure.
CONCLUSION:
National Service Training Program is a beneficial subject to have, because we can learn
and experience things not just intellectually, but also through physical, social, and spiritual well-
being. Inside the classroom we can learn through oral communication by our professor in NSTP,
by sharing our experiences about what’s the issue that is growing here in the Philippines that can
relate to the topic that we are discussing about. Also, it can benefit us to have a broad knowledge
about our government and many other things that are related into the law.
On the other hand, for the outside the classroom hours, as what I have said above, it is
truly a great tool to help us boost our physical and social well-being. Physically, we are tasked to
do a thing such as cleaning our school surroundings. We can also improve our social skills
because of the interaction that is being implemented during the hours of classes outside the
classroom. This also, concludes that we all know not all students are interested in this kind of
subject, but I definitely suggest that it is a must try experience of your college life, because there
are a lot of things that you can discover to improve yourself more in many aspects.
NSTP is really unforgettable, there will be times that we have to share tasks, students are
very noisy, my other group mates are absent or not in the mood to help us and sometimes the
weather is not fine but in spite of all of this happenings, I know that we also had fun, we develop
good relationship with the students as well as with my group mates and classmates.
At the end of the day, having an a NSTP subject during 1 st year of college life is truly a
remarkable experience, because we can discover a lot of things to improve and be a better
version of ourselves, it serves as an eye-opener for us freshmen students to think in a way of
being a matured person.
