Teaching Reflection

Do you believe in destiny? I did not intend to be a teacher when I was young but

growing up in the teacher family makes me become teacher without intention. Both of my

parents are teacher, my older sister teaches in kindergarten school, aunts and uncles are

teachers, and some cousins are teachers. When I was young, I was the top of the school

student. I passed into the best high school in the region where top students were gathered. All

of us appreciated the value and opportunity of education. We competed to pass the admission

to the highest ranked schools in university such as school of engineering, medicine, and

business. Finally I passed the admission to the business school in the top university of the

country. My family was proud of my success for being in the top university but I did not realize

what I supposed to be? One of the reasons was that whatever I chose it must not be a teacher

because teaching professional got low salary. Studying in the business school is one option to

make high salary and I was in that school with the conscious driven by money. In the second

year, my GPA reached below 2.00 because of I fail statistics, economics, accounting, and

finance. In the other hand, my English and marketing grades were excellent. I still did not want

to disappoint my parents’ hope for giving up the business school but I had just found my skills in

English instead of math. It was the time I have decided the right career as my gift provided. I

choose to study the master in language right after I graduate bachelor’s degree. Then the true

career began after I got the M.A. in language studies.

Teaching Reflection 2

The first teaching experience started in the college level. I taught Basic English, Business

English and English for Specific Purposes. It was enjoyable to be the important person who

spoke in front of more than one hundred students for two hours and did not make them fell

asleep. It was challenge to invent the strategy to memorize English vocabulary in the creative

way. It was powerful to excite students with examination that over their expectation. When I

assigned difficult special project to students but they presented better than I expected, was

astonish. When students accepted that they should have studied English with the teacher like

me since they was younger, overwhelm me. I was the kind of teacher they looked for long time.

Every graduation day, the graduates came back and thanked me for making them tough in

English helped them get good job, was also overwhelm. I just realized that the value of a person

is not always judged by how high the salary is, but it rather how satisfaction one has as a being.

Do I regret for not being a doctor, engineer, or businessman? Yes, sometimes. Because

of I disappointed my family’s expectation in being as the social value expects. The financial

stability is the strong foundation in living. Do I regret for being an English teacher? Not at all,

since I choose to be in the area where I good at, it is my final decision. I never been painful

when I stand in front of the class to teach the subject I know it so good. Money matter for

teacher is not difficult to manage as long as I know the balance of spending. My real value is

based on the career success as a teacher who can make students explore their potentials as I

have been. Me?, I am a teacher.
