1.0 SCOPE
1.1 This guideline covers estimation of man-hours for piping activities.
2.0 REQUIREMENTS
To estimate man-hours for a particular job, the following inputs shall be obtained
from business development department.
a) Scope of work
b) Process flow Diagram (PFD)
c) List of equipment’s
d) Preliminary plot plan, if any
e) Process & Instrumentation diagram (P & ID), if any
f) Line list, if any
3.0 ESTIMATION
3.1 For preparation of Plot-plan, depending upon facilities involved, man-hours should
be considered. Man-hours should be estimated, keeping in mind that it will
undergo four to five revisions and alternatives.
3.2 Man-hours for preparation of piping design basis and piping material specification
should be considered depending upon the inputs provided.
3.3 Depending upon the inputs provided, No. of equipment layouts and piping layouts
to be estimated. for estimation purposes, a scale of 1 : 50 shall be considered for
equipment layouts and 1 : 33 1/3 scale for piping arrangement drawings.
3.4 Tentative No. of lines can be found out from the available PFD’s & P & ID’s.
Based on this information and depending upon client’s requirement, No. of in
isometrics to be estimated. also noted that isometrics shall be in accordance with
guidelines for preparation of isometrics GL. No. 006 Rev - 1.
3.5 For preparation of MTO in two or three stages viz. preliminary, intermediate or final
MTO, depending upon number of P & ID’s and piping layout, man-hours should be
estimated.
3.6 If there is scope for preparation of any statutory drawings, such as drawings for
(a) CCOE approval
(b) IBR approval etc.,
separate man hours shall be considered.
3.7 Man-hours for stress analysis and support engineering should be considered. For
this purpose the amount of work involved can be estimated from the input
documents.
3.8 Man-hours for procurement activities such as the following shall be considered.

(I) Preparation of Material Requisitions (MRs)
(ii) Preparation of Piping Erection tender specification
(iii) Preparation of insulation and painting specifications
(iv) Preparation of Purchase Requisitions
(v) Technical Bid analysis and recommendation
(vi) Vendor drawing review should be considered separately.
4.0 EXCLUSIONS
Exclusions, if any should be clearly spelt out while forwarding man-hour estimation
to BDP.
