1998 Kitfox Series 5 Outback Kit
I purchased this kit from the original owner who stored it in a sealed hangar and garage its
whole life. It has never been stored outside or gotten wet. The original owner assembled the
controls and the ribs on the fuselage and wings over the years, but to address some issues, the
kit needs to be taken back a few steps.
I fully intended to build this kit, however, I have decided to make the leap further into aviation,
and go for my instrument and commercial rating, and thus will not have the time to build, or
ability to store it.
I intended to build this kit with some parts making up the few differences between the 5 and
current Kitfox S7 Super Sport. The S7 firewall forward is 100% compatible with a model 5, so
long as you modify the elevator to be larger, or buy the S7 elevator. From there, it is only minor
differences separating the model 5 from the S7 – most all of which can be easily implemented.
(The only change that was too involved for me to consider is the lower elevator pushrod tube of
the S7)
Aside from building as usual, three main action items need addressed with this kit
1. The wing spars with their internal I‐beam inserts need replaced. Due to not catching
some out of spec lift strut hole patterns, when drilling the lift strut rivet holes, resulting
holes ended up with an insufficient end margin on the internal I‐beam inserts. New
spars and inserts are provided, along with all new lift strut brackets (a better design)
The ribs can be removed from the old spars with heat from a heat gun. One wings’s
forward spar is already free. The epoxy can also be removed with heat and a razor – like
a knife thru chocolate. You could also just buy new ribs from Kitfox to cut off some
hours of work, though the ribs themselves are fine.
2. Working on the fuselage, I discovered poor adhesion of the powder coat, and light
surface rust under the powder coat in some areas. All of it came off with a few passes of
a scotchbrite pad. This issue is common on the model 5 Kitfox due to improper surface
prep, and many people have sand blasted and repainted their builds with epoxy primer
and paint color of their choice. Other areas tested showed excellent adhesion, and clean
metal beneath, but for peace of mind, I decided to prep to paint. The fuselage is
currently stripped of all controls and ribs, and ready to be blasted, epoxy primed, and
painted.
3. The trailing edge of one flapperon became delaminated over the years. This needs
cleaned up and re‐epoxied with Hysol. (then riveted per the build manual)
4. A model S7 elevator is needed to match the further out model S7 firewall forward, or if
you are a welder, you could modify the current one to be larger.
5. The kit has the streamlined rib horizontal and vertical tail kit with fiberglass fairings.
Some of the ribs were damaged during removal for paint prep. Should cost around $60
for enough aircraft plywood to re‐make them. Easy trace and cut job.
Build a Kitfox S7 at a fraction of the cost.
Less than a new kit from Kitfox ‐ and with $16K in extras.
