Intuition vs Reasoning Explained

Intuition is rapid, automatic, and effortless, while reasoning is deliberate, effortful and done with conscious thought. Studies show self-monitoring belongs to effortful System 2 thinking. Accessibility exists on a continuum from rapid intuitive System 1 operations to slow, serial and effortful System 2 operations. Some intuitions, like those of experts, may not be easily ruled out. Doubt is a phenomenon of System 2 awareness of incompatible thoughts.

Intuition vs Reasoning

Reasoning is done deliberately and effortfully, but intuitive thoughts seem to come spontaneously to
mind, without conscious search or computation, and without effort.

Studies using the dual-task method suggest that the self- monitoring function belongs with the
effortfull operations of System 2.
At one end of this dimension we find operations that have the characteristics of perception and of the
intuitive System 1:
they are rapid, automatic, and effort- less.
At the other end are slow, serial, and effortful operations that people need a special reason to
undertake.
Accessibility is a continuum, not a dichotomy, and some effortful operations demand more effort than
others.
Some of the determinants of accessibility are probably genetic; others develop through
experience. Should we really rule out expert intuitions?
Complete suppression of ambiguity in conscious perception

Doubt is a phenomenon of System 2, an awareness of one's ability to think incompatible thoughts

Collective Unconscious
Structures of the unconscious mind which are shared among beings of the same species
Human collective unconscious is populated by instincts, as well as by archetypes
"archetypes," as I have called them, belong to the basic stock of the unconscious psyche and cannot be
explained as personal acquisitions
The collective unconscious exerts overwhelming influence on the minds of individuals. These effects
of course vary widely, since they involve virtually every emotion and situation

Archetypes are typical modes of apprehension, and wherever we meet with uniform and regularly
recurring modes of apprehension we are dealing with an archetype

Activity cannot be "learned"; it makes more sense as experiencing intuition about how to act -
