CNC Lathe Lab for Mechanical Diploma

This document provides instructions for a lab experiment on a CNC lathe. The objectives are for students to learn how to read drawings, write CNC programs, operate a CNC lathe, and maintain workshop safety. Students will plan a machining process, write and simulate a program for the CNC lathe to machine an aluminum or steel bar based on given dimensions. They will then run the program on the lathe. In their report, students must explain the apparatus, safety precautions, procedures, results including their program and a photo of the finished part, discuss CNC lathe operation and safety rules, and state whether the finished part matches the intended dimensions.

INTRODUCTION:

Computer Numeric Control (CNC) is the automation of machine tools that are operated by precisely
programmed commands encoded on a storage medium(computer command module, usually located on the
device) as opposed to controlled manually by hand wheels or levers, or mechanically automated by cams
alone. Most NC today is computer (or computerized) numerical control (CNC),in which computers play an
integral part of the control. In modern CNC systems, end-to-end component design is highly automated using
computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) programs. The programs produce
a computer file that is interpreted to extract the commands needed to operate a particular machine by use of
a post processor, and then loaded into the CNC machines for production.
Lathes are machines that cut workpieces while they are rotated. CNC lathes are able to make fast, precision
cuts, generally using index able tools and drills. They are particularly effective for complicated programs

designed to make parts that would be infeasible to make on manual lathes. CNC lathes have similar control
specifications to CNC mills and can often read G-code as well as the manufacturer's proprietary
programming language. CNC lathes generally have two axes (X and Z), but newer models have more axes,
allowing for more advanced jobs to be machined.

APPARATUS:

CNC Lathe Siemen Controller, aluminum bar/mild steel

SAFETY PRECAUTION:

There are several key factors to avoid or prevent any accident in the lab.
1. Work habits
2. Security self
3. Security when using the equipment
4. Housekeeping work
5. Focus attention and calm at work
6. Placing the cleanliness and neatness of dress

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. As refer to table 1, plan the process and prepare the project according this following procedure.
⮚ Write programming
⮚ Key in programming
⮚ Simulation/dry run
⮚ Run machine

2. During working with machine make sure all safety aspect is followed.

3. After finish machining clean the machine tidily.
