Electrical Engineers, the American Musaum of Safety the American Fngineering Standards Committee (later changed to American Standards Association and subsecuently to the USA, Standards Institnte), Department of Labor — Stste of New Jersey, Department of Labor and. Indusity — State of Pennsylvania, and the Locomotive Crane Manufactusers Association. On june 11, 1925, the American Engineering Standards Committee approved the ASME Safety Code Correlating Committee's recommendation and authorized the project, with the US. Department ff the Navy, Bureau of Yards and Docks, and ASME as sponsors In March 1926, invitations were issued to 50 organizations £0 appoint representatives 10 a Sectional Committee, The call for organization of this Sectional Committee was sont out ‘October 2, 1926, and the committee organizes: November 4, 1926, with 87 membors representing, 29 rational organizations, The Safety Code for Cranes, Derrick, and Hoists, ASA 11302-1983, ‘nas creaied from the eight-page document referred to inthe fsst paragraph. This document was reaffirmed in 1952 and widely accepted as a safety standard. ‘Due to changes in design, advancement in techniques, and general interes of lebor and industey {in saety, the Sectional Committee, under the joint sponsorship of ASME and he Naval Facilities Enginoaring Command, U.S. Department of the Navy, was reorganized as an American National Standards Committee on January 31, 1962, with 39 members representing 27 national organizations "The format of the previous code was changed so that separate standards (each corplete as to construction and installation; inspection, testing, and maintenance; and operation) will cover the different types of equipment included in the scope of #30. In 1982, the Committce was reorganized as an Accredited! Organization Commitee, operating, under procedures developed by the ASME and accredited by ANS! "This Standard prooonts a coordinated sot of rulos that may serve as 2 guile to government and othe regulatory bodies znd municipal authorites cesponsibe forthe guardingand inspection OF the equipment falling within its scope. The suggestions leading, (o accident prevention ai piven both ac mandatory and advisory provisions: compliance with bath types may be required ‘by employers of their employees. "in case of practical difficulties, new developments, or unnecessary hardship, tho administrative or regulatory authority may grant variances from the literal requirements o7 permit the use of fother devices or methods, but only when it is clearly evident that an equivalent degree of protection is thereby secured, To secure uniform application and interpretation ofthis Standard ‘ministrative or regulatory authorities are urged_to consult th ES0 Committee, in accordance with the format deseribed in Section IX of the B30 Standard Introduction, before rendering, decisions on disputed points. ‘Safety codes and standards ae intanded to enhance publicsafety Revisions zesul from commit. tee consideration of factors such as echinological advances, new data and changing environmental fend industry needs, Revisions do rot imply that previous editions were inadequate. ‘in this Volume of the Standard, maintenance has been made mandatory, defiitions have boon revised, and other changes have been made to improve clan. This edition was approved by the BS) Committee and ANDI and was Gesignated as an American National Standard on May 13,2010. In addi- tion, the manual shall also provide a statement of those actors that alter the vacourn lifter’ iting capacity and related limitations, Several factors known to affect the ‘vacuum lifter’ hiéting capacity are noted below. (a) Load Rigidity. "The rigidity may cause the vacuum pads and the slructurs to be loaded unevenly: The rigid- ity may vary depending on orientation. 2 () Load Strengit. Stress induced by the loads own ‘weight and the stress from the vacuum pads may dam- age the load, (e) Load Surface Conditions, Uneven or rough surfaces ‘may affect the vacuim padi'sebility to sttach or maintain, ‘a seal Frictional properties may affect the capecty. (i) Lead Ovarian. As Une load extends past the sup- ports ofthe vacuum pads, the load may be damaged or deflect and peel away from the pad seal. () Angie of tie Load. Te effect of the eoeftcient of {tiction between the lond and vacuum pad becomes sig- sificant when the load is not horizontal. ) Nuorber of Pads Attached fo the Lond. ‘The eapacity varies with thenaimber of pads Fuliyattached tothe load, (g) Lond Temperature. Flevated temperatures may damage the vacuum pads or alfect the function of the pads, (1) Flecation al Vacuuns Leoel. The vacuurn pad rat- ing varies with the vacuum level achieved under the pds. Ifthe vacuum level decreases from the vacuum level used for capacity caleulations, the ultimate pad capacity is reduced.
