BODY LANGUAGE
What is body language?
A communication that is non verbal and a message is transferred just
by moving or looking at the different postures of body parts which
could be termed as “GESTURES”
Does body speaks too?
As such body does not have any organ to produce sound but by
expressions, movement of different body parts, touch and other
gestures let us know the facts that he/she might not be interested to
share with us. Communication is one of the most important means to
express our views but surprisingly 55% of the daily conversation is
through body gestures. Voluntary and involuntary movements are also
considered as body language, where voluntary movements are just the
gestures while involuntary movement are such happening which
cannot be controlled by us. (Eg. When abashed, sweating occurs
automatically which cannot be controlled by us.)
Listed are some parts of the body that allows our body to have a non
verbal communication-
HEAD, EYEBROWS,EYES, NOSE, LIPS, TONGUE, JAW, BODY PROXIMITY,
SHOULDER MOVEMENT, ARM PLACEMENT, LEG AND FEET PLACEMENT,
HAND AND FINGER GESTURE.
GESTURES-
Gestures usually includes hands or head..
Examples-
Hand wave- Usually if we want to draw attention of a person
standing far from us, we prefer to wave hand instead of shouting
and calling him.
Hand shake- when we meet someone or at the time of leaving, we
indicate our friendship by shaking hands.
Shoulder shrugged - shrugging shoulder indicates your
disapproval or like you do not know of the matter or when you
just don’t care.
Thumbs up- a sign of good luck or your approval on the topic.
POSTURE-
Posture is defined as position of the body-
Example-
Forward head and flat back expresses poor posture.
Forward head rounded shoulder, sway back and weak abdominal
muscles also shows poor posture.
Balanced up straight posture is the sign of good posture
FACIAL EXPRESSION
Smile- indicates the positive sign and also a friendship
Raised eye brow- is the sign of surprise
Furrowed forehead- for worries and anxiety
Frown- when you dislikes something or have suspicion
DRESS &APPREANCE
Most of the people judge us by our looks, if we wear good clothes,
we are considered to be in high class society and contrary if we
wear poor or untidy clothes, people will judge us totally
differently. It not only defines your standard but also your class
and attitude. So tidy and good dress is the most important
characteristic to improve your personality.
EYE CONATCT
If you are in face to face communication, it is a need to look into the
eyes of the speaker. It shows your interest to the topic the speaker is
speaking. Absence of eye contact shows your lack of interest & miss
understanding. Eye contact may indicate the positive as well as
negative behavior. Looking into eyes for too long to the listener
expresses that the speaker might be speaking wrong or fake.
SILENCE-
The power in the silence cannot be in the speech. It is also necessary
to keep quite sometimes making your conversation more meaning
full and impressive.
Biting the nails-
Nervousness, stress and insecurity. Gradually it becomes the habit
and also is not considered as a positive sign in interview or daily life
conversation.
Hand on cheek-
Hand on cheek is the most common habit among humans. When you
think of some incident or someone special, you ought to keep your
hands on cheek.
HEAD IN HANDS-
Holding your head with hands shows many expression, you may be
upset being ashamed, sometimes you do not want to show your face
to them and several other reasons
NODDING OF HEAD
It indicates or signifies that you are totally agreed with the speaker
and want to go along with the speakers opinion.
