Nursing Management of Intussusception

Intussusception is a condition where one part of the intestine telescopes into another, generally at the junction of the ileum and colon. It can be caused by a "lead point" like Meckel's diverticulum, polyps, or enlarged lymph tissue from viral disease. In infants under 1 year old, the main symptom is sudden crying and drawing up the legs in pain, followed by vomiting and returning abdominal pain after 15 minutes. Over 12 hours the vomit may contain bile and the stool or vomit blood, as the intestine becomes obstructed and distended.

Intussusception

 Is the condition where one portion of the intestine telescopes into another.
 Generally at the juncture of the distal ileum and proximal colon.
 A “lead point” on the intestine likely cues the invagination such as:
 Meckel’s diverticulum, a polyp, hypertrophy of Peyer’s patches (lymphatic tissue of the
bowel that increases in size with viral diseases
 Bowel tumors

Risk Factors

 It generally occurs for unknown reasons in infants younger than 1 year

Signs & Symptoms

In Children having this condition the following may be observed:

 Suddenly draw up their legs and cry as if they are in severe pain
 They may vomit
 Intense abdominal pain strikes again after approx. 15 minutes with same phenomenon
 Vomitus will begin to contain bile because the obstruction
 Blood appears in the stool and possibly in vomitus in approx. 12 hours
 Abdomen becomes distended
