Tango

Originated:
The tango dance is usually performed by a man and a woman, expressing an element of
romance in their synchronized movements.

Tango dance is one the most famous partner dances that emphasizes the vibrant and playful
style of movement, rich expressions, improvisation and requires close connection and passion
between dancers.

Tango is a partner dance, and social dance that originated in the 1880s along the Río de la
Plata, the natural border between Argentina and Uruguay(Buenos Aires). It was born in the
impoverished port areas of these countries, where natives mixed with slave and European
immigrant populations.

The words "tango" and "tambo" around the River Plate basin were initially used to refer to
musical gatherings of slaves, with written records of colonial authorities attempting to ban such
gatherings as early as 1789.

When tango first emerged, the church banned it because it was the music of the “immoral”
factions of society. It was no longer banned when the coup of 1930 occurred, but there was
censorship of lyrics that supported populist ideas and used lunfardo, the slang of the working
classes in Buenos Aires

Movements:
In tango, the steps are typically more gliding, but can vary widely in timing, speed, and
character, and follow no single specific rhythm. Because the dance is led and followed at the
level of individual steps, these variations can occur from one step to the next. This allows the
dancers to vary the dance from moment to moment to match the music and their mood.

Costumes:
Modern tango dresses are very sensual - short, have asymmetrical hemlines, are adorned with
intricate fringes and crochet decorations, and show cleavage. They can be made both from
traditional and modern (lycra and stretch fabric) materials. As for footwear, women should
almost exclusively use high heel tango dance shoes.

Men’s tango fashion is much more traditional, with straight-cut trousers, shirt, and a part of good
dancing shoes. Many of the dancers also frequently wear accessories such as vests, hats, and
suspenders.

Flowing skirts, gaucho or Capri pants are a good option for women. For men, jeans are fine or
pants that are loose and allow movement.

Health Benefits:
It has been suggested that tango makes people feel more relaxed, sexier, and less depressed,
and increases testosterone levels.

Dance targets six main areas considered to be important for high quality of life and successful
aging:
