Project Title: Pre-Commercialization Tools and Strategies for Effective

Transfer of Technologies of Industrial Technology
Development Institute (ITDI)

(2) Rationale/Significance

The key objective of this research is to proceed one step further than mere
production and dissemination of new scientific knowledge. Instead, value for money is
determined by socio-economic impacts of generated technologies. In this premise,
validation of the efficacy of technology and innovation in terms of economic
marketability is vital in the technology assessment. Both technology transfer officers
and the S&T researchers play an important role in this course of action thus, needs to
establish practical skills and experience in dealing with pre-commercialization issues.

Pre-commercialization involves interrelated activities to evaluate fully market

potential opportunity and the extent of readiness of a technology (product/service) for
transfer and adoption. Pre-commercialization activities include systems for the conduct
of technology audit, financial valuation, market validation, social marketing aspects and
negotiates with possible technology takers/adopters.

The project intends to bridge these gaps through practical learning mediums under
the mentorship of third-party experts. This unique approach hopes to harmonize R&D
and technology transfer officers in aiming for technology commercialization. Learnings
will be shared and experienced first-hand and will focus on in-house technologies. At
the same time, the project will improve upon existing ITDI pre-commercialization tools
for ease of use and relevance.

The project is supposed to be significant in institutionalizing the ITDI’s pre-

commercialization strategies while evaluating effectively business and commercial
opportunities of generated technologies and innovations.

(3) Project Description:

The project is an enhancement program for ITDI technology transfer officers and
researchers towards institutionalizing appropriate strategies and applicable marketing
and business tools that can be used in assessing the value of the generated innovation
and technology as to its business opportunity and chances of commercial success.

The project will start from the review and appraisal of the technologies generated
by the Institute for the last three years using criteria and tools for technology readiness
underscoring both its technology and financial valuations.
In summary, researchers and techno-transfer officers will collaborate toward
implementation of business ideas/strategies acquired throughout the entire process
and jointly harness learnings in developing and implementing effective technology
commercialization plans.

(4) Project Objectives:

General Objective(s):
a. Institutionalize pre-commercialization tools/strategies for the marketing and
commercialization of ITDI’s generated technologies and research products;
b. Provide experiential learning for techno transfer officers and researchers on
actual engagements with possible investors/businessmen.

Specific Objective(s):
a. Conduct technology audit on ITDI research outputs using improved assessment
tools;
b. Identify ITDI technologies that showed better marketability/commercial success
c. Develop appropriate business models to suit target markets for identified
technologies;
d. Organize a technology demo-day with businessmen/investors to feature
identified ITDI technologies ready for adoption; and
