Lotus

Lotus or Nimphaea is a plant that grows on the surface of the water so it is called
hydrophytes. The division of this plant is Magnoliophyta, with the class Magnoliopsida, which
belongs to the order Nymphaeales, and the family Nymphaeaceae. This plant with another name
Lotus requires sufficient sunlight to grow and develop. Lotus is adapted to an environment that
has abundant water availability and high humidity. One of the right areas for lotus habitat is the
Malang City Tugu Pool.
In ancient Egypt, lotus and lotus grew on the banks of the Nile. Nymphaea caerulea and
Nymphaea lotus are two species originating from Egypt. N. caerulea flowers are only a day old,
bloom in the morning and sink under the water at dusk. Flowers of N. lotus bloom at night and
bud in the morning. Relics of the two types of native Egyptian lotus were found in the tomb of
Ramses II.
Lotus has about 50 species, some of which are Nymphaea alba, Nymphaea blanda, and
Nymphaea lutea lotus. While the lotus in the monument pond is Nympahea capensis with
purplish pink flowers. Morning is a good time to watch the lotus blossom. This plant is spread
so much that it appears to fill the entire pond. Lotus flowers are found on stems with diameters
between 5-10 cm. Parts of plants that can be seen clearly are leaves.
Lotus has wide leaves with a circular shape and jagged leaf edges. Most of these leaves
float on water to take oxygen in the air. Lotus has a stem that serves to support the leaves and
absorb nutrients. Most are submerged in water, but there are some that appear above the water
surface.
Lotus is a unique aquatic plant. Lotus growing in very muddy water (dirty, brown), the
color of the flowers is more brilliant. The color of a flower when it is whiter, if red is redder, if
pink is brighter. Lotus is often used as an ornamental plant because the flowers are beautiful
and colorful. Besides being beneficial in the aspect of beauty, lotus also plays an important role
in the health field.
The nicotinic acid content in lotus plants is useful for stopping vomiting of blood. Lotus
seeds are used to overcome and eliminate insomnia. Not only that, this type of hydrofit is also
able to treat dysentery, treat nosebleeds and normalize blood pressure. Not only useful for
humans, lotus can also be a food source for fish that live in pponds.
