Hybrid Electric Vehicle Control Strategies

The document discusses the motivation for developing hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions from conventional internal combustion engine vehicles. The goal of the research is to model an HEV powertrain in MATLAB/Simulink and develop appropriate control strategies to meet objectives in different modes. A rule-based control strategy is implemented using a state-flow model in Simulink linked to the vehicle powertrain model. The drivetrain model, consisting of various block-sets, is an important part of simulating the HEV powertrain.

Motivation:

 The automobile has undergone countless advances since its conception over 100 years
ago.
 Improvements are still being made to the ways that cars are designed and perform and
currently there is a growing emphasis on a vehicle's fuel efficiency and tailpipe
emissions.
 After implementing BSVI in India in the year 2020 vehicle manufacturers must meet
emission norms.
 Most of the manufacturers are trying to get a solution for conventional IC engine
vehicles
 The drawback to engines, both large and small, is that they are not as efficient at low
engine speeds as they are at high engine speeds
 To reduce the tailpipe emission from conventional vehicles, electric vehicles are being
researched.
 The main drawback of EV is its low range and unavailability of charging points.
 Hybrid Electric Vehicle implementation in a Vehicle is a good trade-off between an
electric and IC engine power which ensures sufficient all-electric range and minimum
emissions as well.
 hybrid vehicles are becoming more impressive as they are very efficient and reduce pollution
 There are various control strategies to command the power from power converter
 Control strategies are the algorithms written that will command each power source to power
the vehicle

AIM
There are different strategies for utilizing the energy in the battery for an HEV which plays a part
in the energy management strategy selected.
A blended strategy uses a combination of both the motor and the engine over the entire cycle.
To review the relevant literature on MATLAB/Simulink model of hybrid electric vehicle and to
model a powertrain of a typical hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) in the MATLAB/Simulink
environment with certain control objectives.

To develop appropriate control strategies for this HEV powertrain to meet these planned
objectives in various modes.

To validate the performance of the control strategies using Hardware-in-loop test facility and
compare the Simulink results for various control strategies on each power converter power
output.

Actual Research done

For the simulation of the hybrid electric vehicle powertrain, the model of the drivetrain is the
most required part
Hence the drivetrain modelling is an important part of the above-stated problem
The drivetrain model consists of various block-sets of the drivetrain.
The rule-based strategy is the most basic and simple strategy from those.
The design of the controller for the hybrid vehicle in rule-based strategy implementation is done
using the State-flow model.
The State-flow for the rule-based strategy is formed in Simulink and linked with the powertrain
model of the vehicle.
