Elements of the Methodology


Plan
Preparation Introductory Start the class with a morning prayer.
Activity Check student’s attendance.
(15 minutes)
Review previous lesson by asking the question:
Is Literature important to life?
Why is it so?

Entice student’s attention through a vocabulary game. Provide the class with
10 pictures of different non-prose texts and have them unlock the jumbled
words.

Process students answers:


Post the day’s objective and have the entire class to read it.
Draw students attention back to the pictures presented and ask students’
schema. Have student’s identify the functions of each type.
Presentation Activity READ & ANALYZE!
(5 minutes) Present to the Class through a POWERPOINT PRESENTATION a sample of the
non-linear texts. Challenge them to get information out of the non-linear
text presented.

Analysis GUIDE QUESTIONS IN INTERPRETING THE TABLE


(10 minutes) 1. What type of non-linear text is presented?
2. What could be the possible title of the text shown?
3. Where was the data taken from?
4. What are the implications of the data?
5. What conclusions can be arrived at from the data?

(Solicit varied answers from the students based on their


analyses on the text presented.)

Linear Text
 It focuses on the arrangement of the words, both grammatically and
stylistically
 Most common type of reading
Examples: Story, Speech, Letter, Newspaper Report, etc

Non-Linear Text

 Used to ease understanding of large quantities of data


 Represented by symbols or legends
 Graphical representation of data
 The Reading path is non-sequential
 Text combined with visual elements
Examples: Charts or Graphs Pictures, Graphs, Tables and Graphic Organizer

 Challenge the students to draw connections between a non-linear text to


other disciplines like Arts, Science and even in Araling Panlipunan.

GENERALIZATION:

Based on the discussion on the difference between linear and non-linear


text types, challenge students to sense its differences through definition,
reading path, content, efficiency and examples.
Practice Application
(10 minutes) The Bar Graph shows the number of students studying engineering at the
University of the Philippines.

Interpret the graph by filling the paragraph with factual information


based from the non-linear text presented.
