When to make a line graph?
Line graphs show changes of information over a time period. For instance, if the US Dept of Health wanted to look at
the obesity rates in the USA every year over the past decade, a line graph would be used.

When to make a bar graph?


Bar graphs are used when comparing groups of information. For instance, if the US Dept of Health wanted to look at
the obesity rates of men to women, a bar graph would be used.

What do all graphs need? Rules to keep in mind


• Title • Space out numbers equally
• X axis label • Make gaps between bars equal
• Y axis label • Make bars equal in width
• Key (if needed)

Graph #1: The API test score is an important way to measure how successful CA schools are performing. If we
examine the API scores over the course of several years, hopefully we will see a positive pattern. Here is the BHHS
data from the years 2005-2010.
