CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Introduction

One of the ways of having an income is through

entrepreneurship. It is the discovering of new ideas to

create and innovate things by taking the risk.

Entrepreneurs is someone who organizes, manages, and

assumes the risk of a business or enterprise.

Entrepreneurship is the capacity and willingness to

develop, organize and manage a business venture along with

any of its risk in order to make a profit. It also

influences the mindset of the students to earn income at

their young age.

According to previous study, entrepreneurship is

defined as venture creation activities of people who are

currently studying at a university. There are reasons why

this type of entrepreneurship deserves our attention.

First, young people and especially students generally hold

a strong interest in an entrepreneurial (Sieger,

Fueglistaller, & Zellweger, 2011). Many students are

ambitious and like to try out different things while

studying. It can be argued that the university is an ideal

context for testing one's entrepreneurship capabilities

(Houser, 2014). Secondly, research undertaken at university

serves as source of knowledge that creates new

entrepreneurial opportunities which can lead to the

formation of innovative new firms (Audretsch & Lehmann,

2005).

Entrepreneurship allows students to learn more than

just their chosen field of study, and creates an

interdisciplinary environment to work and develop in

entrepreneurship can be quite stressful, but it allow

students to gain the necessary life skills and confidence

to make it in the "real world" by gaining hands on

experience with entrepreneurial tutors and lectures, and by

taking advantage and free resources. It also allows student

to meet minded people in an atmosphere of creativity and

broad mindedness.

Academic performance is how well the students do good

in school. It is also the standard given by the educational

institutions for the students to participate and see if

they excel. And it also became the basis of the government

and other institutions in measuring someone's capabilities.

According to previous study, academic performance

refers to the level of performance in written works and

exams. How students deal with their studies and how they

cope with or accomplish different tasks given to them by

their teachers, within this work measured from the

standpoint of the academic grades.

According to Wikipedia (2013), academic performance

is the outcome of education; it is the extent to which a

student, teacher or institution has achieved their

educational goals. Thus performance is characterized by

performance on tests associated with coursework and the

performance of students on other types of examinations

(Kyoshaba, 2009).

This study focuses on the effect of being

entrepreneurs to the academic performance of the students

at San Roque National High School. The researcher wanted to

find out the impact of entrepreneurship in the daily life

of the students who engage on it. And to know the reason

why the students are being involve on it.

The aimed of this study is to find Entrepreneurship:

Its impact on the academic performance of the students in

San Roque National High School.

Specifically, this study is trying to give and discover the

answer in the following questions:

1. What is the impact of being student entrepreneurs?

2. How can being student entrepreneurs affect their

academic performance?

3. What are the struggles of students who are engage in

Entrepreneurship?

4. Can student entrepreneurs manage their time and

schedules, properly?

5. What are the suggest ways on how student entrepreneurs

cope with the problems they encounter?

Conceptual Framework

Students that engaged in Entrepreneurship would

experience struggles in some ways. Knowing them by the

used of questionnaires and survey. The impact of being

student entrepreneurs and if it can affect their

academic performance or not, would be given an answer

at the end of the study. And to find if they manage

their time properly. And lastly, the suggestion ways

on how they cope up with the struggles they

encountered.

Significance of the Study

This study will hope to benefit the following:

Students. This study will give students a knowledge about

their engagement in entrepreneurship. And to present an

awareness about the impact of entrepreneurship in their

academic performance.

Teachers. This will give an awareness to them in the

situation of the students who engaged in entrepreneurship.

And to expand their understanding in the presented issue.

School Administrators. This study will serve as an eye-

opener on the struggles and problems faced by the student

entrepreneurs.

Parent. This will make them to understand their children

more and recognize the effort they are doing to help them.

Future Researcher. This will be a big help to them if they

will research the same study.

Definition of Terms

The following terms are given meaning as used in this

study:

Entrepreneurship. Is defined as venture creation activities

of people who are currently studying at a university.

Academic Performance. Refers to the level of performance in

written works and exams.

Entrepreneurs. is someone who organizes, manages, and

assumes the risk of a business or enterprise.

Student Entrepreneurs. The respondents of the study.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents the literature and studies, which

have been reviewed to find out the relationship of the

present study to the previous ones. In these studies,

reviewed, how entrepreneurship affects the academic

performance of the student entrepreneurs. It also helps the

researchers to find basis and information in order to gain

an in depth knowledge and complete understanding to the

study.

Foreign

According to (Lautenschläger & Haase, 2011), some

scholars argue that personal qualities favorable to

entrepreneurship are inherent, and that the prospects for

developing them through EE may be limited.

Using multiple regression analysis, showed that

entrepreneurial intention is predicted by the need for

achievement, family business background and subjective

norm. The result suggests that students will choose to

become entrepreneurs if there is a need for achievement,

when they come from a family that engages in business and

if there is support from close individuals such as family

members and friends (Tong et al. 2011).

The previous article on academic performance in USS

did not find any difference in the GPA between participants

in the CP and other entrepreneurship projects and this

corresponds with our finding. Our study in LSS, however,

indicates that EE can improve academic performance in

different subjects. It could be that the dissimilar results

in USS and LSS reflect the way the CP is constructed at

different education levels (Johansen,2012).

(Kume et al. 2013), provide evidence of positive

effects of subjective norm on entrepreneurial interest

among undergraduate students in Albania. Students whose

parents had entrepreneurial experience were more in the

distribution of respondents who indicated interest in

starting their own business after graduation. This supports

arguments that prior exposure to entrepreneurship either

directly or indirectly through the family background

influences the individual’s attitudes regarding

entrepreneurship.

(Malebena, 2014), students were more pulled rather

than pushed into entrepreneurship. In other words, students

were interests in entrepreneurship mainly as a result of

positive factors such as the opportunity to make use of

creative talents, independence and prospects for higher

earnings than through negative factors such as high

prevalence of unemployment.

Where the students engage in business activity, time

spent on the study would somewhat be reduced. This is

because of possible trade-off arguably poses unfavorable

effect on academic performance. The possible reduction in

time allocation to academic purpose for other activities

such as entrepreneurial engagement is yet to be apply

explored in the literature (Machio 2012; Abamba 2016).

Locale

According to (Laguador, 2013), Entrepreneurship is

one of the skills included in the institutional Intended

Learning Outcomes of the Lyceum of the Philippines

University wherein the students would be able to engage in

projects and activities using basic knowledge and skills in

business management, entrepreneurship and finance

management.

Competitive education policies and programs are

needed in entrepreneurship education because it will create

a new breed of academic entrepreneurs who will later become

part of an entrepreneurial university (Velasco, 2013).

There is limited research on entrepreneurial

inclinations and intentions from the Philippines. From the

literature review, the works of Ramos found that

entrepreneurial intention is unaffected by the students’

family background, family income, and bachelor’s degrees

(Ramos 2014).

(Suarez-Ortega & Galvez-Garcia 2017; Velasco, et

al., 2016), On the propensity of an individual to become

entrepreneurs, studies have shown that gender is inevitable

factor. Studies suggest that the motives and decisions that

drive female entrepreneurship are because of obligation,

since the limited supply and market access opportunities

for paid employment, then by vacation. Even if females tend

to have high scores on knowledge about entrepreneurship,

their willingness to start their own tend to be lower than

that of their male counterpart (Suarez-Ortega & Galvez-

Garcia 2017; Velasco, et al., 2016).

CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the research method, research

locale, respondents and participants of the study,

instruments used for gathering data, procedure of the

study, and statistical analysis of the data.

Research Method

This study utilized the survey method, which means it

is a bias study of individuals from a population and

associated survey data collection, such as questionnaire

construction and methods for improving the number and

accuracy of responses to survey.

Research Locale

The study was conducted at San Roque National High

School located at Brgy. Dela Cruz, Bamban, Tarlac. Figure 2

shows the google map of San Roque National High School.

Respondents of the Study

70 Students are selected to be the respondents which

came from two Junior level and Senior level, were the

respondents and participants of the study. The distribution

of the respondents by grade level is shown in table 1.

The respondents came in the different grade level,

were chosen by bias and purposive judgement of limited

participants. Also the researchers prefer the selected

grade 9, 10, 11 and 12 as respondents in order to maintain

the credibility of the objective.

The tool for data collection includes questionnaire.

Essentially the researcher must ensure that the instrument

chosen is valid and reliable. The validity and reliability

of any research projects depends to a considerable extent

on the appropriateness of the instrument. This part+ deals

with methods used by researcher in completing and solving

the research problem. It focuses on the data gathering and

the materials used.

The questionnaire will be the major instrument used in

this study. And its aim is to gathered data regarding the

impact of entrepreneurship in the academic performance of

the student entrepreneurs in San Roque National High

School. And to know the struggles and problems that they

encountered.

Procedure of the Study

The following were the procedures in the

implementation of the study:

Part 1. The Preparation

The researcher made a written request of permission to

the principal and assistant principal of the school to

conduct the necessary action. The researcher also

coordinated to the teachers of the grade 9, 10, 11 and 12

students regarding to the implementation of the

distribution of the questionnaire to the chosen

respondents.

Part 2. Data Gathering

The next part of the study was the actual gathering of

data through the use of questionnaire assessment. The

questionnaire was distributed the day before the

application of assessment and collected the answered

questionnaire on the same day.

Analysis of Data

Quantitative data used by the respondents were derived from

the questionnaire recorded and transcribed by the

researcher. The acquired data was used to know if

entrepreneurship can really affect the academic performance

of the students who are engage on it or not. And the

purpose of the collected data was analyzed descriptively

and inferentially to identify the mean

CHAPTER IV

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS, AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

This section presents, analyzes, and interprets the

data on the impact of entrepreneurship in the academic

performance of the students at San Roque National High

School. Its aimed is to know more about the student

entrepreneurs.

Table 2 showed that 36 respondents answered to earn

income as their reason why they engage in Entrepreneurship

which is equivalent to 51%. The other 16 respondents

answered to help their parent which is equivalent to 23%.

Second to the last was answered by the 14 respondents which

is equivalent to 20%. And only 4 respondents answered just

pastime as their reason which is equivalent to 6%.

Table 3 showed that 27 respondents answered that there

is no one who influence them to engage in Entrepreneurship,

it is just their own decision, it is equivalent to 37%,

while 18 respondents answered that they were inspired by a

successful entrepreneur, which is equivalent to 25%. The

other 16 respondents answered that it was their parent with

the percentage of 22. And just only 9 respondents answered

friend.

In table 4 showed that 44 respondents answered own

money which means that they wanted to save money before

they engage in business. And only 1 respondent answered to

lend money from other people, so it means that most of the

respondents doesn’t want to have debt from other people.

In this table showed that 46% respondents answered

personal skill as the factor that influenced their decision

in engaging in Entrepreneurship. 33% answered opportunity,

while 8% answered family background and only 7% answered

financial status.

6 hours. 19% was answered 7-8 hours while only 3% answered

shortage of income as one of their struggle that they

should innovate things or do promotion to increase their

SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This research was conducted to investigate the impact of

entrepreneurship in the academic performance of the
selected students during the school year 2019-2020 at San
Roque National High School. This study was aimed to know if
entrepreneurship can affect the academic performance of
students or not.

The research instrument used in the study was

questionnaire and bias on selecting students per grade
level. The researchers asked each section on junior and
senior high if who are those students who have a business,
they are the only one who have been given a questionnaire.

Data were gathered through the use of giving

questionnaire for the survey to know if entrepreneurship
can affect the academic performance of the students in
junior and senior high school. We conducted 20 items of
question and used bias per section. After that we collect
the questionnaire and tally the results so that we know the
total and percentage of the students answers each question.

Seventy (70) students from junior and senior high

school were the respondents of the study.

Conclusions

Based on the findings of the study, the following

conclusions are drawn

1. Mostly, the impact of being a student entrepreneurs

had a positive effect based on the survey that had
been conduct, because being a student entrepreneur is
not the reason to failed when it comes to academic
aspect, instead it enhance their communicating skill.

2. Being a student entrepreneurs, it mostly enhance their

confidence, creativity, self starter, and most
important their determination that can affect their
academic performance in a positive way.

3. The struggles of student entrepreneurs encountered was

mostly about the customers shortage of income.

4. Majority of the student entrepreneurs answered yes,

that they can manage their time and schedules properly
because they can study well while doing business.

5. The most suggested ways for the student entrepreneurs,

balancing their time can be a big help in managing
their study and business. Do promotion and innovation
of product to increase their sales.

Recommendations

In the light of the findings of the study and

conclusions drawn from these, the following

recommendations are offered:

1. Student entrepreneurs should do promotion to avoid

having a shortage income.

2. Student entrepreneurs should makes allotted time for

doing their school works to avoid entrepreneurship for

being hindrance.

3. The problems and issues encountered by student

entrepreneurs should be properly addressed to achieve

a good education.

4. Further studies significant to the present should be

conducted by future researchers in order to improve

the study.
