Worksheet Topic 5

1. A block of mass m slides along a frictionless surface as shown in the
figure alongside. If it is released from rest at A, what is its speed at B?
2. A pendulum bob has a speed of 3 m/s while passing through its lowest position. What is its speed when it makes an
angle of 600 with the vertical?
3. A body dropped from a height H reaches the ground with a speed of 1.2√𝑔𝐻. Calculate the work done by the air
friction.
4. A block of mass M is pulled along a horizontal surface by applying a force at an angle 𝜃 to the horizontal. The
frictional corfficient with the block and the surface is 𝜇. If the block travels at a uniform velocity, find the work
done by this applied force during a displacement d of the block.
5. A particle is placed at the point A of a frictionless track
ABC as shown in the figure alongside. It is pushed
slightly towards the right. Find its speed when it
reaches the point B.
6. A block of mass 250 g slides down an incline of inclination 370 with a uniform speed. Find the work done against
friction as the block slides through 1.0 m.
7. A box weighing 2000 N is to be slowly slid through 20 m on a straight track having friction coefficient 0.2 with the
box. Find the work done by a person pulling the block with a chain at an angle 𝜃 with the horizontal.
8. A block of weight 100 N is slowly slid up on a smooth incline of inclination 37° by a person. Calculate the work
done by the person in moving the block through a distance of 2 m, if the driving force is (a) parallel to the incline and
(b) in the horizontal direction.
9. A 250 g block slides on a rough horizontal table. Find the work done by the frictional force in bringing the block to
rest if it is initially moving at a speed of 40 cm/s. If the friction coefficient between the table and the block is 0.1,
how far does the block move before coming to rest?
10. The heavier block in an Atwood machine1 has a mass twice that of the lighter one. The tension in the string is 16 N
when the system is set into motion. Find the decrease in the gravitational potential energy during the first second
after the system is relseased from rest.
11. The two blocks in an Atwood machine has massed 2 kg and 3 kg respectively. Find the work done by gravity during
the fourth second after the system is released from rest.
12. A small block of mass 200 g is kept at the top of a frictionless incline which is 10 m long and 3.2 m high. How much
work was required (a) to lift the block from the ground and put it at the top, (b) to slide the block up the incline?
What will be the speed of the block when it reaches the ground, if (c) it falls off the incline and drops vertically on
the ground (d) it slides down the incline ? Take g = 10 m/s2.
13. A block weighing 10 N travels down a smooth curved track AB
joined to a rough horizontal surface. The rough surface has a
friction coefficient of 0.2 with the block. If the block starts
slipping on the track from a point 1 m above the horizontal
surface, how far will it move on the rough surface?
14. A block of mass 1 kg is placed at the point A of a rough track
shown in figure. If slightly pushed towards right, it stops at the point
B of the track. Calculate the work done by the frictional force on the
block during its transit from A to B.
15. The bob of a pendulum at rest is given a sharp hit to impart a horizontal velocity √10𝑔𝑙, where l is the length of the
pendulum. Find the tension in the string when (a) the string is horizontal, (b) the bob is at its highest point and (c)
the string makes an angle of 60° with the upward vertical.
16. We want to slide a 12-kg crate up a 2.5-m-long ramp inclined at 30o. A worker, ignoring friction, calculates that he
can do this by giving it an initial speed of at the bottom and letting it go. But friction is not negligible; the crate
slides only 1.6 m up the ramp, stops, and slides back down. (a) Find the magnitude of the friction force acting on
the crate, assuming that it is constant. (b) How fast is the crate moving when it reaches the bottom of the ramp?
17. A 120-kg mail bag hangs by a vertical rope 3.5 m long. A postal worker then displaces the bag to a position 2.0 m
side-ways from its original position, always keeping the rope taut. (a) What horizontal force is necessary to hold the
bag in the new position? (b) As the bag is moved to this position, how much work is done (i) by the rope and (ii) by
the worker?
