Format in Plant Design

I. Introduction
a. Product Description (this include the description of the product, its uses/applications and the
reason why you chose the product)
b. Market Study (this include the current and projected demand of the product and available
sizes and prices)

II. Development of Manufacturing Process (synthesize the related literatures and sources that you used
as a basis in the development of your process flow, include a discussion on the operating parameters
of the major processes)

III. Design of Major Equipment

a. Heat and Material Balances (present and discuss the process flow diagram (PFD). Note:
this part of the paper includes only the summary. Detailed computations should be presented
in the Appendix)
b. Process Equipment Design (present a PFD indicating the corresponding label of the
equipment, include only the summary sheet of each equipment. Summary sheet of each
equipment should include a schematic diagram of the equipment with dimension labels,
name of the equipment, symbol name, purpose of the equipment, operating parameters
(temperature and pressure, number of trays, etc.), dimensions including thickness, factor of
safety (design allowances) and material of construction. Again, detailed calculation should
be placed in the Appendix)

IV. Plant Lay-out (provide a 2D-drawing of the proposed plant with the corresponding spacing of each
equipment from the other. Connect the equipment using pipes. Include also the auxiliary equipment
such as pumps, blowers, compressors, fans and pollution control devices. Provide a justification on
the chosen spacing of each equipment. Include also the location of administrative building, process
control room, parking spaces for light and heavy vehicle, recreational places/parks and warehouses)

V. Design of Auxiliary Equipment (include a schematic diagram of each equipment connected to the
auxiliary equipment. For example, for a distillation column, show the connection between the column
and the pump. You must also indicate the length of the pipe needed to reach the feed stage where
the feed will be introduced. Same summary sheet with PED must be provided including the operating
parameters such as rpm for pumps, power requirement, efficiency, etc.)

VI. Process Instrumentation and Control (per process, identify the potential disturbance variables,
controlled variables, set points, manipulated variables and final control element. Discuss also the
what type of control are you going to implement (i.e. manual control, semi-manual, automatic).
Indicate also what type of sensors are you going to use to measure the controlled variable and justify
why you chose those. (e.g. for temperature, you can use thermistor, thermocouple and others
depending on the range of operating temperature). For automatic control, discuss what type of
controller is most suitable (e.i. P, PI or PID controller)

* to be discussed in the final term

VII. Site location (using google earth map or google earth pro, locate your desired location of the plant.
Insert shape (rectangle, etc.) to mark your chosen location. The specific location of the plant must
be expressed in terms of latitude and longitude coordinates; include also the elevation above sea
level. In the discussion, cite specific reasons why you choose that location (e.g. raw material is
abundant, relatively low labor cost, etc.). After choosing the location, reorient the Plant lay-out; you
must include NWSE direction. Orientation will vary from plant to plant depending on several factors.
For example, if you are producing a poisonous gas, make sure that in case of leakage, the poisonous
gas will not be carried into the residential areas by the wind. Thus, it is eminent that you need to
consider the prevailing wind speed and direction to enhance safety. Orientation of the plant should
be based on the wind direction.

VIII. Plant Economics* (include a summary sheet indicating the break-down of capital outlay (CO),
miscellaneous and other operating expenses (MOOE), personnel salaries and profit. The break-even
point and payback period must be discussed and compared with the existing plant to determine the
feasibility of the plant)

IX. Product Marketing (include a detailed discussion on the sizes of the products, packaging and mode
of transportation. A drawing of the lay-out of the product including the product name, shape,
nutritional content (if applicable), volume or mass and others must be provided).

X. Safety in the Process (discuss how are you going to maintain a safe and healthy workplace. This will
include good manufacturing practices (GMP’s), HACCP, Emergency Preparedness and material
safety data sheets (MSDS) of all the chemicals used in the process. Note: you must allocate a
department devoted into this. It is commonly labeled as “Environment, Health and Safety” (EHS)
department or section)

XI. References and Cited Literatures (arrange in alphabetical order; separate web references with book
and journal references)

XII. Appendixes (include detailed computations)

* to be discussed in the final term
