METHODOLOGY
 Mughal Revenue System (1570 AD)
During AKBAR Reign an elaborate system of land
management and revenue assessment was evolved.

 Sur System (1540 - 45 AD) :

 Sher Shah’s land revenue reforms have unique
importance in the administrative history of India for
they served as the model for future agrarian systems.
 After a careful and proper survey of the lands, the
State settled the land revenue direct with the
cultivators, the demand of State being fixed at 1/3 or
1/4 of the average produce, payable either in kind or
in cash.
 CADASTRAL SURVEY –MADRAS PRESIDENCY
LAND SURVEY IN MADRAS PRESIDENCY UNDER BRITISH RULE
 The British Government established Board of
Revenue in 1786.
 A Revenue survey was conducted to determine the
wealth of the various provinces and their power to
bear taxation.
 Regular survey of land and work was started in
1858 under Madras Survey Department.
CADASTRAL SURVEY
 First it was introduced in 1873 – 74 in the districts
Kurnool, Salem, Madurai, Bellary, Tirunchinapalli.
 1891-92 in the districts of Krishna, Anantapur,
Malabar and South Canara.

 CADASTRAL SURVEY
• Triangle system of survey was the first and most scientific one
introduced in Madras Presidency.

• By this system, the field boundaries were durably demarcated

and the whole field was divided into many triangles and they
formed the each survey field.
• It was first introduced in Anantapur district during 1880-86
• The Block Map System was implemented in 1890.
• By this method economy would be achieved
• The Diagonal Offset and Triangle System was introduced
• The Madras Survey Department constituted in the year 1854

 The object of land survey is the
determination of the boundaries and the relative
position of the objects on any portion of the earth’s
surface in order to produce pictorial representation
of the land on paper with all distinguishing
features

Principle of survey
Objectives of Cadastral Survey:-

 Determination of village, field boundaries

 Preparation of village maps, field maps, area list, land
register containing the particulars like survey number,
extent, classification, assessment etc.

 Survey Instruments:
 Chain(100 Links): a) Gunter Chain – 66 feet length – Link -7.92 inches
b) Metric Chain – 20 metres length – Link -20cm
 To measure the measurements
 Cross Staff: Used to form perpendicular offsets. Consists of wooden
blocks – 4”X4”X2 ½ ”, 4 ½ ” – 5 feet long with iron rod with 5/8’
diameter.
 Arrows: 10 numbers – 1-1 ½” feet long. To put at the end of each chain
measurement.
 Standard pole with Red & White band flag: 6 feet long used to place at
the junctions, bends… for identification.
 Thedolite: To take the angular measurements of traverse.
 ETS(Electronic Total Station): To take the linear & angular
measurements by using bhumithi software.

commercial complex, shopping complex and etc.,
Extent : 10 Acres

2) Medium Blocks: Houses with compound walls / gardens
will be covered in this block.
Extent : 40 Acres

3) Open Block: Agricultural lands with scattered buildings
will be covered in this block
