Case Analysis
(Chapter 7: Paying Attention Pays Off for Andra Rush)
I. Synopsis of the Case
Andra Rush has been working hard and listening to other people her entire
life. She is a nursing school graduate and took courses of MBA program at the
University of Michigan. She is an owner of her own trucking company, which
specializes in emergency shipping. She started her trucking company when
she had a chat with one of her patients about his experience in the
transportation business. The business sparked the attention of Rush that she
took the risk and enters the transport business by purchasing three trucks, even
though she had minimal experience in running a business and limited
resources. Initially, the business boomed to fleet of 1,700 trucks, as Rush
became jack-of-all trades, she did everything herself. She accepted any job
that came in, paid attention to her customers, met and overcame any
expectations they may have had regardless of the circumstances she found
herself in. Through her perseverance and dedication as a leader, Rush and her
company overcame many of the shortcomings new businesses and established
corporations face every day.
II. Statement of the Problem
The problems that Andra Rush overcame while molding her business in to a
successful one were issues that many small, large, old and new businesses
face on a daily basis. Theses problems include lack of handling business, lack
of expertise and industry knowledge, scarcity of funds and resources,
dissatisfied customers and employees, loss of business and credibility. Rush
and her transport company overcame these by adapting and developing her
business to changing market conditions, meeting and exceeding customer
expectations, employing a diverse workforce and unending passion for
continual learning and understanding any situation.

transport business to be successful. It is a matter of constant commitment and

IV. Alternation Course of Action
In addition to the company’s culture focused on growth of employees and
customers, expanding this into the concepts of Servant Leadership will expand
the opportunities for further expansion and success. Andra’s role would
therefore change from a production manager to a leader whose primary role
may be understood as doing whatever it takes to assure that things run
smoothly. Her role and the role o her employees are less focused on the
hierarchy of directions but rather the concept of the need to serve other. By
fully embracing the concepts of Servant Leadership, Andra can expand her
company and client base.
Through the implementation of the other concepts of Servant Leadership such
as commitment to other’s growth, stewardship, foresight, and empathy her
company can provide better service to her customers. By focusing on the
growth of her customers and service their needs to grow, she will position
herself to follow their growth.
V. Analysis (Advantages and Disadvantages)
Andra Rush made a big decision to build her own transport business with the
lack of experience and limited resources. These are disadvantages to her since
it was a tremendous risk since she started the business with those in mind. But
there are also advantages that resulted from her decision:
She gained new experiences and skills that can help her and the
company in the succeeding years
She is more flexible when it comes to meeting and exceeding her
customers’ expectations
She had a fresh start to establish the culture of her company
She can make use of the problems that she faces in order to find a
better solution if faced again
VI. Conclusion
Through the use of successful leadership techniques and skills, Andra Rush
was able to create a successful transportation company. Her dedication to her
staff and the desire to listen to the needs of the clients, enable her to
successfully lead the company. However, additional skills and abilities can be
incorporated to advance her company further.
VII. Recommendation
To ensure Andra Rush has continued success in company she can incorporate
several leadership techniques, specifically a “Competency Model”, and a “360
Feedback Survey”. Rush Trucking is an ever-expanding company. A
competency model could ensure employees are hired according to Andra
Rush’s vision, and fit the company’s culture and tradition. The competency

model could help ensure Rush Trucking is hiring employees that can help
maintain its continued success in a very tuff and competitive industry.
Andra can further help solidify Rush Trucking’s success by developing a 360
feedback survey. This will ensure the business’ management and staff do not
become complacent in their current success, and not give focus to changing
trends in the industry. The 360-feedback survey should be constructed to
ensure it promotes change in all aspects of the company from people,
organization, product, and resources. It should include feedback from: self,
boss, peers, direct reports, and customers. If incorporated the 360-survey
feedback could give Rush Trucking a competitive edge. It will allow
employees at every level of the company to become mindful of keeping the
focus on the customer, employees and the company’s vision and values.
By acting upon the concepts of serving the client as well as understanding her
company’s strengths and weaknesses, she can grow further as a leader. In
addition to the personal growth, embracing these leadership concepts will also
allow her business to continue to grow and prosper.
