Double Wing Offense Playbook Guide

The Rip 88 Super Power is the base play of the Double Wing formation. It is a powerful off-tackle run that looks to gain 4-6 yards by overloading the line of scrimmage with blockers. The key blocks are the pulling linemen and fullback kicking out the defensive end. The quarterback tosses the ball to the running back who follows the pulling linemen through the hole. Proper blocking assignments and techniques are important to the success of this play.

Double Wing Scheme Overview

The Double Wing is a powerful run-based formation that has had a strong record of success at the youth through high school varsity
level. The Double Wing scheme uses a balanced formation for a series-based attack which looks to overwhelm the defense at the
point-of-attack with more blockers then they have defenders. Its core play is an off-tackle run called Super Power, Toss and a host
of other names. This off-tackle play looks to pry a hole open by kicking out the outside defenders, seal the inside defenders and
have a double team block at the point-of-attack. The Double Wing forces the defense to respect the power run game and in doing
so open up the misdirection/counter game. This scheme uses a complex blocking scheme where offensive linemen pull and trap.
Hiding the football, elaborate fakes and crossing runningbacks are all staples of this attack.

Glossary
AREA: Blocking rule that states that a player will block any defender trying to get through his “area” which is defined as the space between and
including the gaps on either side of him. If multiple players are trying to run through then he gives priority to the inner most defender. Used
exclusively for pass blocking.

BANANA ROUTE: The angle that the FB runs when kicking out the defensive end. The route looks like a banana.

CLOCK: Refers to location where the QB will step to. When the QB is under Center that is considered 12 o’clock and all of the remaining numbers
are based on this starting position. For example, 6 o’clock is directly behind the QB.

DOWN THE TRACKS: Is a blocking rule that has the offensive player block the first player away from where the play is designed to go.

FIRST LINEBACKER INSIDE (FBI): A blocking rule which tells the offensive player to block the first linebacker to his inside which is towards
the Center.

MAN AWAY: A blocking rule that tells the offensive player to block the first down lineman away from the point of attack.

MAN ON: A blocking rule that tells the offensive player to block the down lineman who is directly over him.

ON: Same as Man On.

PLAYSIDE GAP: A blocking rule that tells the offensive player to block the first down lineman in the gap towards the point of attack.

Introduction to Formations
SCHEME
In order to have all of the offensive players understand where the desired point of attack is we assign a number (“hole”) to a specific offensive
player, not the space in between players. This is a key difference between the Double Wing and most other offensive schemes. For example, a play
ran to the “4 hole” means that the runningback is going to run to the inside hip of the right tackle. Using this numbering systems makes play calling
vastly easier and allows the offense to understand where their assignments are in relation to the point of attack.

We will number the holes to the right of the Center with even numbers and holes to the left with odd numbers.

Blocking Rules
BANANA ROUTE: Refers to the path the FB runs when throwing a block. The path of the route is bent like a banana.

BASE BLOCKING RULES: A blocking rule that tells the offensive player to block the down lineman who is directly over him.

DOWN THE TRACKS: Is a blocking rule that tells the offensive player to block the defensive linemen that is located between him and the player
to his inside. If no defensive linemen exists he performs FBI (see definition below).

FBI: Means to block the first linebacker to the inside.

ON: A blocking rule that tells the offensive player to block the defensive lineman that is over you.

PULL: Pulling in the Double Wing attack is different than traditional offenses as the linemen will actually slide step while facing
the line of scrimmage.

SHOESHINE: Same as a cut block which is legal in the free blocking zone. If you are using the USA Football Youth Rule Book the Shoeshine blocks
become Reach blocks.

WEDGE BLOCKING: Includes a triple team at the point-of-attack. All other linemen and tightends steps to the inside, drive their inside shoulder
into the inside player’s ribs, inside hand pushing the backside, maintain contact and drive upfield.

Double Wing Player Attributes
Quarterback – It is not a requirement to have a superior athlete here. Must be a leader that can learn and execute the double
wing offense with it’s complex footwork and ball faking. The ball faking MUST be well executed to fool the defense. Arm strength
is not critical as long as they don’t turn it over. Must be a competent blocker. If you do have a super athlete then you can utilize
the quarterback running plays.

Wingbacks (2B & 4B) – Speed is a real plus. If they don’t have speed they better have power. We want wingbacks that
diligently follow their blockers (get on their butt). Must be adequate blockers. If they can catch then they can be used in the
passing game.

3 Back – MUST be a very good blocker with some size as they have to kick out the defensive end. MUST be a good straight
ahead runner to make the Wedge play work. Needs to be quick but they do not have to be fast, although that is a great plus if
you have it. Tough player that is wiling bang out yards.

Tight Ends (XTE & YTE) – Must be good blockers. No exceptions. Need to be able to catch the ball as they often times
go uncovered.

Offensive Tackles – Need players that are enough so that they can pull down the line. Can be somewhat overweight as long
as their pulling technique is sound. Must be able to shoeshine block well.

Offensive Guards – They are the best athletes on the offensive line. They need to be able to move and deliver a big blow. Put
your best two lineman here. C – Can afford to be slower and even heavy set. Short squatty players may have a place at center.
Must be able to drive block and, most importantly, shoeshine block.

Right Tackle – On, Area the CB
Right End (YTE) – Run straight for 7 yards and then break to the corner QB – Reverse out to 5 o’clock, takes two steps and then throws it over the

COACHING POINTS:
4 QB needs to rollout (Brown) and lead the 4B with a good throw.
4 If the CB jumps the route the QB should have a running lane.
4 YTE needs to run the seam route hard so that the FS has to commit.
4 If you can teach your QB a progression read the YTE could be his first read and will most likely garner single coverage.

Liz XTE Seam Pass
Liz XTE Seam Pass: In trying to stop the Double Wing run game many defensive coordinators will remove their Free Safety (FS) and bring all 11

Right Tackle – On, Area XTE. If the XTE is covered then run the ball
Right End (YTE) – On, Area

COACHING POINTS:
4 Most likely the defense will be bringing a great deal of pressure. Make sure the QB makes his pivot and gets rid of
the ball before he takes a sack.
4 QB needs to get extra depth on his pivot so that he can see past the defensive line and get a visual lock on his WR.
