MATHEMATICS : CHAPTER -7 MEASUREMENT
We measure things to know how heavy, long, tall etc. they are. There are many ways to measure
things.
When we talk of size, we use big and small. For e.g. Lion is big but mouse is small.
When we talk of length of object, we use the term long and short. For e.g. Ruler is long but eraser
is short.
Let’s learn more about them.

Tall is a vertical measure; it generally means how far away the bottom of an object is from the top
of that object. For e.g. a plant is short but a tree is tall.

Thicker/ Thinner
When we talk of Thick it means broad or bulky things while Thin can be describe something that
is narrow and slender. For e.g. a needle is thin but a skipping rope is thick.

Length
Measuring Length using Body parts ( Non Standard Unit)
We can use our body parts to measure lengths.

Measurement by following:

Measure the following using body parts.

Standard (Bigger) unit for measuring length is Metre (m).

Bigger unit for measuring length is Kilometre (km).
1 km = 1000 m
The distances like distance between Delhi and Haridwar are measured in kilometre
(km)whereas the length of the door or window is measured in metre (m).
Measure the length of each pencil in centimetre (cm) and write in the box.
Weight
Look at the pictures and read the sentences.
An elephant is Heavy. A rabbit is light.
We can also write these sentences as follows:
An elephant is HEAVIER than a rabbit.
A rabbit is LIGHTER than an elephant.
Look At some more example.
A pumpkin is HEAVY. A feather is LIGHT.
A pumpkin is HEAVIER than a feather.
A feather is LIGHTER than a pumpkin.

The weight of a watermelon is measured in kilogram (kg) whereas the weight of an
apple is measured in gram ( g).
Capacity
Capacity is the amount any object can hold.
A jug can hold 8 glasses of water.
We can also write it as follows:
A jug holds more water than a glass.
A glass holds less water than a jug.
Look at another example.
A Kettle can hold 5 cups of tea.
A kettle holds more water than a cup.
A cup holds less water than a kettle.
