 PREFACE
The year of manufacture recording in the Registration Certificate has great
importance. In few cases, the dealers purposefully furnish false model year and month
in Form 21, for registration. A few officers became the victims of their tricks (even
became the accused in a vigilance case).

In this circumstance I tried to collect the data and make a hand book to identify
the year and month of manufacture.

VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is a unique identification number for a

vehicle. In most of the vehicles, VIN includes the year and month codes. This book
includes month and year codes for most commonly registered vehicles in Kerala.

In few vehicles, it punched on the identification plate only. It should be

definitely inspected by the officers, at the time of inspection.

One particular vehicle manufacturer has mostly same year code, even
though various models. But it is different for a few models.
I express my profound gratitude to my all well wishers for their encouragement.

If any errors noted, kindly inform me for rectification.

I hope it will be helpful to the officers in our department.

We can identify the vehicle manufacturer, by verifying the first 3 letters

or digits in the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number). These 3 letters known as
World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI) and it will be unique for every vehicle.

CENTRAL MOTOR VEHICLES RULE MANDATES THE INCLUSION OF
MONTH AND YEAR CODES IN VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER
(VIN)

(1) Every L, M and N categories of motor vehicles, manufactured on

and after 1st day of April, 2009, shall bear the identification number
including month and year of manufacture, embossed or etched or
punched on it, in accordance with AIS 065:2005 till the corresponding BIS
specifications are notified under the Bureau of Indian Standard Act, 1986.

(1A) Provided that in an agricultural tractor or construction equipment

vehicle, where the space is insufficient for etching, embossing or
punching the engine number, chassis number and month of
manufacture, the etching, embossing or punching of year and month of
manufacture shall be on an identification plate welded or riveted to the
body of the vehicle.

(2) The vehicle manufacturer shall intimate to the certifying testing

agency regarding the place where the numbers shall be embossed or
etched or punched including code for the year and month of production in
respect of each model and such testing agency shall include these details
in the certificate of compliance granted by that agency under Rule 126.
