Brief History
○○ Photoshop was developed in 1987 by brothers Thomas and John Knoll, who sold the distribution license to Adobe
Systems Incorporated in 1988.
○○ Photoshop 1.0 launched exclusively for the Macintosh on February 19, 1990. Photoshop 2.5 made its Windows debut
in November of 1992.

○○ In Adobe Photoshop CS, the File Browser comes into its own as your digital imaging hub. With flags, keywords,
and editable metadata, you can now use the File Browser to quickly organize and locate the image assets you need.
Perform batch procedures on groups of images without having to first open the image files in Photoshop.

Quickly create, view, and edit custom file information

Enjoy enhanced automation with conditional actions

○○ Using the Insert a Step button in the Actions palette, conditional logic can now be inserted in ImageReady CS actions.
With conditional logic, ImageReady CS will scan for certain image characteristics (aspect ratio, dimensions, filename,
etc.) and perform a step only if the characteristics match the setting in the step.

○○ ImageReady was discontinnued with CS3

Easily export multiple files from selected states

○○ Instantly create separate HTML pages for each selected state, by outputting multiple files for slices containing selected
states. This new capability of ImageReady CS makes quick work of designing Web pages where different images are
displayed in the same area by the state of different rollovers.

Adobe Bridge (Replaces File Browser)
○○ Adobe Bridge handles all the tasks that you previously did in the File Browser. Flagging is now handled by the star
ratings. Files previously flagged are now marked with one star. In Bridge, Control+D (Windows) or Command+D (Mac
OS) now duplicates an image rather than deselecting it in the thumbnail view.
○○ You can now organize, browse, and locate the assets you need to create content for print, the web, and mobile
devices.
○○ If you have Adobe Photoshop installed, you can open and edit camera raw files from Bridge and save them in a
Photoshop-compatible format. You can edit the image settings directly in the Camera Raw dialog box without starting
Photoshop.
○○ You can use Bridge to synchronize color settings across applications.

Version Cue® 2.0

○○ Manage files and versions as a single user or in a small workgroup. Integrate with Adobe Bridge to manage files for

Multi-image Camera Raw

High Dynamic Range (HDR)
○○ Work with images in 32-bits-per-channel, extended dynamic range. Photographers can capture the full dynamic range
of a scene with multiple exposures and merge the files into a single image.

Optical lens correction

○○ Correct for lens aberrations such as barrel and pin-cushion distortion, chromatic aberration, and lens vignetting. Easily
correct image perspective using the filter’s grid.

Noise reduction
○○ Filter > Noise > Reduce Noise

Layer grouping
○○ You can group layers using the keyboard shortcut Control+G (Windows) or Command+G (Mac OS). The shortcut for
creating a clipping mask is now Control+Alt+G (Windows) or Command+Option+G (Mac OS).

Layer linking and multiple layer selection

○○ Working with multiple layers is easier now because you can select multiple layers in the Layers palette or in the
document window using the Move tool. The layer linking column was removed. To link layers, select multiple layers
and click the link icon at the bottom of the Layers palette. Some menu commands that work on linked layers have
been changed to work on multiple layers.

Add or subtract layers from a selection in the Layers palette

○○ Shift-click (or drag) in the document with the Move tool, with the Auto Select Layer option selected. Previously, Shift-
clicking linked and unlinked layers.

Merging layers
○○ To merge all visible layers into a new layer, press Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac OS) and choose Layer > Merge Visible.
Previously you created a new layer and selected it before merging. To merge any two layers, select them in the Layers
palette and choose Layer > Merge Layers. You can still merge two adjacent layers in the Layers palette by selecting the
top layer and choosing Layer Merge Down.

Loading a selection
○○ To load a layer as a selection, Control-click (Windows) Command-click (Mac OS) the layer’s thumbnail in the Layers
palette. Previously you could click anywhere in the layer.

Clipping mask visibility

○○ To hide all layers except the clipping mask layer and the layer it is clipped to, Alt-click (Windows) or Option-click (Mac
OS) the layer’s visibility icon. Previously, Alt-clicking or Option-clicking hid all layers.

Placing a file
○○ Files that you place into Photoshop with the Place command now becomeSmart Objects.

Smart Objects
○○ Perform nondestructive transforms of embedded vector and of pixel data. Create multiple instances of embedded

Curvature Pen tool

Bezier handles, similar to the Curvature tool in Adobe Illustrator CC. Simply double-click to switch between point

360 panorama workflow

○○ Edit and export 360 panoramas. Photoshop will maintain important metadata to work with third-party viewers. You
can also pan and zoom around your image inside a spherical workspace for a realistic preview experience.

Depth Map import from HEIF

○○ Photoshop now supports High Efficiency Image File (HEIF) format, promoted by Apple in macOS 10.13 and iOS 11.
With depth information provided by the iPhone 7 Plus and future devices, you can create a depth-of-field effect using
