ANNUAL REPORT

2015-16
Innovative Educational &
Welfare Society (IEWS)

1
OVERVIEW OF THE YEAR
2015-2016

This year we were able to touch 350 special children through six
projects, 60 Resource Centre, and through various media,
publications and other activities.

This year too IEWS laid special emphasis on expansion of

education amongst children with special needs (CWSN). Through
its seven different projects, it stressed that education can play a
significant role in empowering CSWN and in securing a rightful
place for them.

Besides education, empowerment of CSWN was also attempted

through the development of various educational software.
Project SMART is a unique project initiated by our NGO in the
year 2003, immediately after inception of our society. The idea
was to develop Assistive Technology Aids in the form of
educational software for Children with Special Needs. There is
hardly any software available for CWSN and Special Children.
The idea was to develop interactive

[Link]
software’s so that the children with any disability could use easily.
Teaming up with several partners across India, we developed many
such IT based educational interventions. Next we started contacting
institutions across the country, helping them get an old Computer (if
they did not have one), giving them the software free of cost and then
training their special educators. Our MOU with partner Institutions also
involved research into the impact of the softwares, and case studies
of children using them.

Overview of IEWS’s work during 2015-16:

PRERNA – RESOURCE CENTER IN St. THOMAS
SCHOOL

St. Thomas’ School is one of the pioneers in establishing this Class for its differently abled
students since the last 30 years.

The technology enabled resource room for ‘Prerna Class’ was established three years back
with a view to enhance multiple skills of students. We have pleasure in sharing with you that
students now work on advanced applications using attractive touch computer systems.
The applications are multimedia based and highly interactive in nature. There are
thousands of applications such as puzzles, brain development exercises, curriculum
resources and audio visual aids.

In a specially created environment, the lab. has EVA tiles as the flooring in chequered
pattern. The walls of the lab. have magnetic boards wherein students can just stick visual
cues by placing the manipulatives on the board. To enhance their awareness of the
environment around them, the students are given festive theme games such as making
scenes for Dussehra, Christmas. A special device called Brain Gym is also used to help them
utilize complete potential of the brain.

An on-going flow of resources ensures that students do not get bored and receive
continuous stimulation and new concepts of learning.

We are proud to state that we have one of the best alternative learning centres in the
country.
