Chapter 6

ENVIRONMENTAL SYSTEMS

6.1 Structural Systems

Steel Construction
It is used in designing and
building industrial spaces.
Structural steel has a high
strength to weight ratio which
makes it ideal to use in
the construction of large
structures such as buildings,
warehouses, bridges, factories etc.

Board Pile
Also known as,
replacement piles are a
commonly used form of
building foundation that
provide support for
structures, transferring
their load to layers of
soil or rock that have
sufficient bearing
capacity and suitable
settlement
characteristics.
6.2 Electrical Systems

Solar PV Rain screen Cladding

Solar PV rain screen cladding provides great insulation for buildings. The
double-façade allows buildings to generate their electricity. In fact, the great
innovation developed by Onyx Solar is that they add photovoltaic properties to this
cladding allowing it to also generate electricity free of cost.

Solar Panels
Solar panels allow us to
generate electricity which we can
then use in a variety of ways.
This process can take place on
either a domestic or industrial
scale. On an industrial scale, we
can use solar panels to provide
electricity for the masses. In this
case, engineers install a large
solar array which forms a solar
power station.
Agora Solar Trees

The Agora Solar Trees are functional sculpture. They produce 4kWh of renewable
solar energy from the bi-facial photo-voltaic panels. The Trees have 4 free charging
stations for personal mobile devices per tree.

Penelco Mariveles Bataan

The Peninsula Electric

Cooperative, Inc. (PENELCO) is an
electric power distribution utility that
distributes sufficient and stable
power supply to the municipality of
Mariveles. The source of the
electric supply is the GN Power Coil
Powerplant
Kinetic Footfall

Kinetic footfall is a new source of electricity, which capture the energy from
human footfall to generate electrical energy. The energy harvested by the pavegen tile
can immediately power off-grid apications such as pedestrian lighting, way-finding
solutions and signage.
6.3 Mechanical Systems

Elevator
An escalator is a power-
driven, continuous moving
stairway designed to transport
passengers up and down short
vertical distances. Escalator are
used around the world to move
pedestrian traffic in places where
elevators would be impractical.

Hydraulic Lift
The proposed
development is consisted of 2-3
storey building which will require
an elevator.

An elevator is a platform or
compartment housed in a shaft for
raising and lowering people or
things to different floors or levels.
Hydraulic
elevators are elevators which are
powered by a piston that travels
inside a cylinder. An electric motor
pumps hydraulic oil into the
cylinder to move the piston. The
piston smoothly lifts the elevator cab. Electrical valves control the release of the oil for a
gentle descent
A travelator is a slow-moving conveyor mechanism that transports people
across a horizontal or inclined plane over a short to medium distance. Moving
walkways can be used by standing or walking on them. They are often installed in
pairs, one for each direction.
6.4 Fire- fighting Systems

Fire Sprinklers
6.5 Sanitary Systems
6.5.1 Water Supply

Rain Water Harvesting

The use of rainwater harvesting system provides ideal merits to any

community. First and foremost, the collection offers a better and efficient utilisation
of energy resource. It is important because potable water is usually not renewable,
thus reducing wastage. The systems used for water collection is based on simple
techniques that are very easy to maintain. The overall expenses used in setting up
harvesting methods are much cheaper compared to other purifying or pumping
means. Also, its maintenance is feasible on the economic front as it does not
require deep pockets
Mariveles Water District

Mariveles Water District (MARIWAD) is the

source of water in the municipality of Mariveles
6.5.2 Sanitary Drainage

Septic tank will not be neeeded, waste water from the prposal will be collected
through a series of sewer lines which leads towards the waste water treatment plant of
Mariveles.

6.6 Waste Management

6.6.1 Solid Waste Management
6.7 Landscape Systems
6.7.1 Plantscaping
Since the proposal is interchange hub, planstcaping will bring benefits to
the building, it enhances the structure and gives users feelof being one of the nature

Bioswales
Bioswales are an
aesthetically-pleasing
alternative to concrete
gutters and storm sewers,
employing vegetated low-
lying areas or troughs
that use plant materials
and specialized soil mixes
to treat, absorb, and
convey stormwater runoff.

Green Roof
Green roofs
serve several purposes
for a building, such
as absorbing rainwater,
providing insulation,
creating a habitat for
wildlife, increasing
benevolence and
decreasing stress of the people around the roof by providing a more aesthetically pleasing
landscape, and helping to lower urban air temperatures and mitigate the heat island
effect. They effectively utilize the natural functions of plants to filter water and treat air in
urban and suburban landscapes

Trees
Provide cooling shade, buffers , absorb pollutants gasses, and filter fine
particulates such as dust, dirt or smoke out of the air.

Green Wall

Reduces urban heat island effect and smog. Cleans outside air of pollutants and
dust and offsets the carbon footprint of people and fuel emissions. Cleans interior air
space by removing VOCs and other harmful toxins like benzene and formaldehyde. Acts
as a sound proofing barrier.
6.7.2 Accessibility

6.7.3 Way- finding

In guiding users regarding the orientation of facilities in the project, signage

shall be provided as a means of way- finding. The purpose of wayfinding
signage is to get a visitor from where they are to where they need to be (to help
them find their way) with the least amount of stress possible. Wayfinding signs do
not need to attract attention in the same way that safety signs do.

Common questions

Powered by AI

Green roofs mitigate the urban heat island effect by absorbing rainwater, providing insulation, and creating habitats for wildlife. They contribute to cooling urban temperatures by replacing heat-absorbing materials with vegetation, which naturally emits moisture and reflects sunlight .

Solar PV rain screen cladding enhances energy efficiency by providing insulation and generating electricity. It incorporates photovoltaic properties that allow buildings to produce electricity at no additional cost, contributing to both energy savings and sustainability .

Agora Solar Trees serve as aesthetically pleasing urban renewable energy solutions by generating 4kWh of solar energy and providing free charging stations for devices. They integrate functional design with renewable energy generation, promoting public engagement with sustainable technology .

Kinetic footfall technology harnesses the energy from human footsteps to generate electrical power. The pavegen tiles used in this system convert the energy from footfalls into electricity, which can immediately power off-grid applications like pedestrian lighting and way-finding solutions .

Structural steel is advantageous in constructing large structures because it possesses a high strength-to-weight ratio, making it ideal for buildings, warehouses, bridges, and factories .

Accessible design plays a crucial role in public infrastructure by ensuring spaces are usable by people of all abilities. Accessible parking requirements outline the number of spaces needed based on total parking, demonstrating a commitment to inclusivity and ensuring legal compliance in public facilities .

Way-finding signage reduces visitor stress by providing clear, easy-to-follow directions and orientation within facilities. It focuses on getting visitors from their current location to their destination efficiently, minimizing confusion and improving user experience .

Rainwater harvesting systems are economically beneficial as they are inexpensive to set up and maintain compared to other water purification or pumping methods. Environmentally, they allow communities to utilize an otherwise wasted resource, reducing reliance on non-renewable potable water and minimizing wastage .

Bioswales manage stormwater by using vegetated areas to treat, absorb, and convey runoff, serving as a visually appealing alternative to concrete gutters. They provide cooling shade, buffer pollution, and filter fine particulates, which enhances urban environmental quality .

Hydraulic lifts operate using a piston inside a cylinder raised by hydraulic oil pumped by an electric motor, unlike traction elevators that use cables. They offer a smoother ride with electrical valves controlling the descent but generally operate at lower speeds than traction systems .
