RISK MANAGEMENT
By: Cynthia Reantaso-Bernabe
Event risk management is not something new but it is more defined now than it
was in the past. The increase in concern for event risk management is brought
about by the increase in the number of professionally managed events. Too often
the strategy event professionals take is more reactive than proactive.
It is human nature to avoid thinking about unpleasant occurrences, and event
planners may be unaware of or unprepared to handle emergencies until it is too
late. Comprehensive risk management must be SOP for every planner.
While indeed, all human activity involves risk, so do all events. Planning,
organizing and servicing events are risky activities because whenever we bring
people together in our events, there is already an element of risk. As the activities,
the business, and the number of people in an event multiplies, so does risk.
Risks therefore must be managed so that we may proceed with our events with the
knowledge and confidence that we can respond calmly rather than react in panic to
all the what-ifs in our events. What if the big earthquake hits, what if fire breaks
out during the event, what if our hired contractor or supplier is nowhere to be
found on the date of the event? What if the client cannot to pay us? What if a
temporary structure collapses? What if terrorism strikes? What if there is death
during the event?
Risk management is about preparedness and protection. Risk management must be
integrated into every stage of the development, planning and implementation of the
event.
