Serviceability
5.4 Problem
5.1 The floor beam in Fig. below supports
nonstructural elements not likely to be
damaged by large deflections. If the service
dead load equals 21 kN/m and the service live
load equals 12 kN/m, does the beam satisfy ACI
Code requirements for allowable deflections? 𝑓
= 25 MPa, fy= 400 MPa.
5.2 For the beam in Fig. (a) Compute the immediate deflection produced by total load,
and (b) estimate the additional long-term deflection if the live load acts continuously. 𝑓
= 28 MPa, fy= 400 MPa.
5.3 Dead weight of the beam in [Link] 5.7 kN/m
Compute (a) the midspan deflection due to
dead load before service live load( P) acts and
(b) the midspan deflection due to total load. 𝑓
= 21 MPa, fy= 400 MPa.

Serviceability
5.4 For each of the cross sections in Fig. determine if the reinforcement satisfies the
requirements of ACI Code for controlling crack width. Exterior exposure, 𝑓 = 30 MPa,
fy= 400 MPa.
