Coefficient of Performance in Refrigeration

This document contains solutions to three questions about thermodynamic cycles: 1) A Carnot refrigerator cycle between 250K and 300K has a coefficient of performance of 5. 2) A reversible cycle between a source of 500K and sink of 300K has a maximum available work of 40kJ for a heat input of 100kJ. 3) A vapor compression refrigeration cycle with enthalpies of 185kJ/kg, 210kJ/kg, and 85kJ/kg at the start of compression, end of compression, and end of condensation has a COP of 4.

Q5:- A Carnot cycle refrigerator operates between 250K and 300 K. Its coefficient of
performance is:
(a) 6.0 (b) 5.0 (c) 1.2 (d) 0.8

Answer :-
Given :-
higher temperature TH=300K

Lower temperature TL=250K

𝑇𝐿
Coefficient of performance COP=𝑇
𝐻− 𝑇𝐿
250
COP=300−250
250
COP= 50
COP=5
Hence, coefficient of performance is 5.

Q46. In a reversible cycle, the source temperature is 227°C and the sink temperature is 27°C. The
maximum available work for a heat input of 100 kJ will be:
2

(a) 100 kJ (b) 60 kJ (c) 40 kJ (d) 88 Kj

Answer :-

Given:- source temperature TH = 227°C=227+273

=500K
Sink temperature TL=27°C =27+273
=300K
We know that maximum efficiency of carnot cycle is given as-
ηmax = 1- 𝑇𝑇𝐻
𝐿
300
= 1 - 500
=0.4
For maximum work –
𝑊𝑚𝑎𝑥
ηmax = 𝑄𝑖𝑛
𝑊𝑚𝑎𝑥
0.4 = 1000
Wmax= 0.4×100 KJ
Wmax =40KJ
So available maximum work is 40KJ.

Q84 The values of enthalpy at the beginning of compression, at the end of compression and at the end
of condensation are 185 kJ/kg, 210 kJ/kg and 85 kJ/kg respectively. What is the value of the COP of the
vapour compression refrigeration system?
(a) 0·25 (b) 5·4 (c) 4 (d) 1·35

Answer :-
3

Given:- h1=185KJ/Kg
h2=210KJ/Kg
h3=h4==85KJ/Kg
ℎ1−ℎ4
COP of vapour compression cycle = ℎ
2−ℎ1
185−85
COP=210−185
COP=4
Hence,coefficient of performance is 4.
