Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are characterized by alterations related to communication and social interaction, as well as fixed interests and repetitive behaviors. ASD are considered together according to their severity and affected skills. It is assessed whether there are intellectual disabilities, language problems, or associated medical conditions present. While a single cause of ASD is not known, there is strong genetic implication, and interaction between genes and environmental factors may play a role in development. Symptoms of ASD can include stereotyped body movements, abnormalities in language emission and content, marked anomalies in nonverbal communication, insistence on routines, restricted interests, and deficits in social or emotional reciprocity.

alterations related to communication and social interaction, as well as by presenting fixed interests and repetitive
behaviors.

A few years ago different types of autism were differentiated, but now we tend to consider them as a whole and
distinguish them according to their severity and the skills they affect. Starting from that base, as explained by José
Ángel Alda, head of the Child-Juvenile Psychiatry Section of the Hospital Sant Joan de Déu, in Barcelona, "what is
valued is, above all, if there is intellectual disability because many people with ASD they have problems in this
area. "

It also assesses whether there are language problems and if there is an associated medical condition. Alda
acknowledges, however, that in many cases we continue talking about Asperger syndrome to refer to those people
with ASD "with high intellectual level", but with distinctive features such as poor social interaction with peers.

Causes.
"At present it is not possible to determine a single cause that explains the appearance of Autism
Spectrum Disorder (ASD), but the strong genetic implication in its origin is possible," as
explained by the Autism Confederation Spain. "The great variability present in this type of
disorders also points to the relevance that the interaction between different genes and different
environmental factors may have in the development of ASD, but for the moment, these elements
are not clearly identified, and it is still a lot of research is needed about it. "
Nor is it known with certainty (except in very specific cases in which the responsible genes have
been identified) to what extent that genetic origin is hereditary (transmitted from generation to
generation) or accidental (as a result of a genetic injury produced at the time of fertilization or
during pregnancy).

Symptoms.
In generalized developmental disorders, such as ASD, there is usually a wide alteration of
various functions. In a very short way, the following symptoms could be highlighted:

Stereotyped body movements.

Abnormalities in the emission, form and content


of the language.

Marked anomalies in nonverbal


communication.

Irrational insistence on routine monitoring.
