INTRODUCTION
This document serves as a design features report for the electrical design of St. Valentine’s
Hospital owned by St. Valentine’s Medical Group. The hospital is currently a double floor
building with identical floors. There are plans for two more identical floors to be built.
The ceiling height is 2.4m and floor area is 1500 sq. m. The total load is estimated, and
lighting options are suggested.
ESTIMATED LOAD
The load is estimated based on Power Density Limits taken from NZS4243.2:2007 and
lumped loads.

POWER SUPPLY
A new transformer of 750 kVA is to be installed on site. When the hospital is expanded a
second transformer or a new transformer should be installed.
LOW VOLTAGE MAIN SWITCHBOARD
A new 400V main switch board will be installed.
SUBMAINS AND RISERS & DB’S
New submains and distribution boards will be installed. A ring main is used to maintain
continuity of supply even during faults.
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
New floor DBs will be surface mounted metal enclosed type.
The DB’s will be designed according to standard construction and generally used
miniature circuit breaker (MCB) protection for sub circuits and
Residual current device (RCD) or
Isolation Transformers for body protected patient areas
with Line Indication Monitors (LIM) according to ASNZS2500-2004
DB’s within public spaces will be non-lockable and located within lockable
cupboards detailed by the architect.
DB’s within service areas that are not required to be within cupboards will be
lockable.
EMERGENCY POWER SUPPLY
Emergency backup options available are:
A 100% Backup generator of 750kVA for the current two floor hospital with
expansion of a similar generator when the hospital building is expanded.
A backup generator of 1500kVA catering for the future expansion now itself.
UPS SUPPLY
Local UPS as required has be provided by the client.
Central UPS system with UPS distribution board on each floor. Higher cost
installation due to new riser cabling and additional floor DB’s.
EARTHING
The earthing system is required.
SUB CIRCUIT CABLING
Sub circuit cabling to final outlets will be via two-compartment skirting trunking surface
mounted (one for power, one for communication), provided to the perimeter of all office
spaces.
LIGHTING
The standards NZS4243.2-2007+A1 Energy efficiency of large buildings and
ASNZS1680.2.5-2018 Interior and workplace lighting: Hospital and medical tasks are used to
determine the needed illumination in the various areas of the hospital and options of possible
lightings are given as below.
Light fittings are taken from Fagerhult Lighting’s catalogue. All lights are LEDs.
