Chapter 1
INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Today’s communication mediums are used worldwide, people can access the
internet using gadgets by establishing a connection to a server, a WiFi or using data from
different networks. Social media is around at every corner of a person’s life, it used at
every little thing a person do .

“Social media is a phrase that we throw around a lot these days, often to describe
what we post on sites and apps like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and others.”
The "social" part: refers to interacting with other people by sharing information with
them and receiving information from them. The "media" part: refers to an instrument of
communication, like the internet (while TV, radio, and newspapers are examples of more
traditional forms of media). From these two separate terms, we can pull a basic
definition together: Social media are web-based communication tools that enable people
to interact with each other by both sharing and consuming information ( Nations, 2017).

Numerous researchers tried to analyze the factor that triggered the massive
dispersion and use of Social media across the globe.

One of the most popular social media site is Facebook. It is a free social
networking Web platform that promotes and facilitates interaction between friends,
family and colleagues. Facebook was founded in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg and several
Harvard University classmates (Techopedia,nd).

Facebook is a social networking website and service where users can post
comments, share photographs and links to news or other interesting content on the
Web,and also you can give reactions, play games, chat live, and stream live video. You
can even do buy and sell with Facebook. Shared content can be made publicly accessible,
or it can be shared only among a select group of friends or family, or with a single
person.

Online social networking has become an integral part of the lives of Philippines'
teenagers with 73% of teens reporting that they use social networking site such as
Facebook daily (Lenhart, Purcell, Smith, & Zickuhr, 2010). Some recent studies have
shown a negative relationship between Facebook use and academic achievement (
Karpinski & Duberstein, 2009), while other studies have shown no relationship between
Facebook and Academic achievement (Pasek, More, & Hargittaai, 2009). Thus, parents,
teachers, and administrators remain uncertain of the effects, if any, of students using
Facebook.

A study examined Facebook usage and academic achievement of high school

students at Dollorway High School. 72 students completed two surveys. The Facebook
Intensity Scale (FBI) and engage for grades 10 to 12. The FBI measures the amount of
time a student spends on Facebook, the extent of a student's participation on Facebook, a
student's emotional connection to Facebook, and a student's integration of Facebook into
his/her daily life. ENGAGE measures 10 psychosocial behaviors that affect academic
achievement of students including academic discipline, academic self-confidence,
commitment to college, communication skills, general determination, goal striving, social
activity, social connection, steadiness, and study skills. Students' GPA information was
also collected. Results of the study showed a negative relationship between intensity of
Facebook use and GPA, a negative relationship between intensity of Facebook use and
goal striving, and a negative between intensity of Facebook use and steadiness. These
findings indicate that a negative really does exist among Facebook use and academic
achievement for some populations. More research is needed to determine why these
negative relationships exist in some populations and not in others.(Alexander, 2012).
With these collected datas and facts , the possibility that Facebook is a factor that can
directly influence the students and can make an impact to their academic performance is
concluded as certain.
Knowing that social media is powerful enough to influence the state and the
communities. It is powerful enough to ignite patriotism or terrorism . Also , we can only
reach a massive number of people only through social media .

The dynamism and strength of social media has a huge impact in our daily lives .
However, threats are also present to the individuals who are involved in using social
media [Link], House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez wants to regulate the use of
social media by mandating social media companies to verify the users before they are
allowed to open their respective accounts.
In many occasions, users use fake accounts by presenting themselves to the online world
as persons whom they are not. This is a classic case of identity theft that is detrimental to
society,he said in filing House Bill 5021.

HB 5021 or the proposed Social Media Regulation Act of 2017, provides that
applicants for social media accounts be subjected by social media networks to effective
identity verification in order to ascertain the authentic of an account. The applications of
those found out as presenting himself as another person whom he is not shall be denied
and the user accounts of other persons the authenticity of which are subsequently
discovered as compromised shall be [Link] proposed bill seeks to afford a
remedial measures on the foregoing matters and will regulate these social media by
mandating social media companies (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc.) to reasonably
verify the identity of user applicants before they are allowed to open an account.
Penalties are also provided for failure to comply with this verification requirement.

Violators of the proposed Act shall be punished with imprisonment of not less
than six years and one day up to 12 years and a fine ranging from P30,000 to P50,000.
Any person who owns or has control over artificial intelligence programs or similar
programs that create social media user accounts that results in the irresponsible use of
social media shall held liable.
As of 2018 , there huge increase in the number of Facebook users, the age range
are dropping , even six years olds are capable of using Facebook. There are many
possible ways of using Facebook : (as a form of communication, entertainment, learning
medium or material, information disseminator etc.) and there are many possible effects
of Facebook in the Academic Perfomance of a Grade 10 student, it can be positive or
negative depending on the purpose it serves to a certain student.

Using Facebook unresponsibly causes distractions, improper learning and

unnecesssary or not essential knowledge. It can be used as a form of abstraction of human
rigths through Cyber crimes such as Cyber- bullying thaht affects the emotional state of
an individual and can indirectly affect his/ her perfomance and cause the decrease of self
– esteem and loss of motivation.

On the brighter face , using Facebook wisely can be very benefecial , it can be an
information dissemennator that is the primary use of social media. Using Facebook, a
student can catch updates regarding topics that might be very essential in his/her
developement or in his/ her studies. Students can also communicate to groups of people ,
in need for an emergency meeting or important discussion , the group don’t necessarily
need to meet up in personaly which will cost a lot of time , effort and money, instead they
can communicate with each other through group chats or group video calls that was made
available by Facebook.

This extensively used social media site is becoming an essential factor in every
student’s life. Given the fact that Facebook is now part of every student’s lives , it is
guaranteed that it can and will certainly affect one’s Academic Performance.

A student’s Academic Performance determine the level of growth an development

of a pupil in learning, understanding, listening, and analyzing. This doesn’t limit or is is
not indicative in a student’s ablities or potentials. An individual will gradually grow as a
person and as a student. Academic Performance recognizes the achievements of a
student and the weak spots that needs some improvements. The desire of every parent
and teacher is to give the student’s a good quality of education in order for them to strive
hard in studying and end up not only with good grades , but also with good personality
and outlook in life. The Academic Performance of a student is very important not only to
the student himself but also to the future that awaits.

Given that Facebook is one of the most influencial social media sites. Curiosity
and relevance to a student’s daily life driven by our eagerness to know things that is
related to our interest is the very reason why , pondering on the topic that involves
Facebook and Academic Performance turned out to be the suited topic for our research .
Efforts will soon be rewarded with benefits that this research will cite . The results of this
study will not only benefit the students , but also the parents and teachers that are the
future readers.
It is clear that Facebook as one of the most well known social media site can cause
different Impacts on the Academic Performance of the Grade 10 Students of PHINMA
University of Pangasinan ,in various ways .

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the Impact of Facebook in the Academic Performance of
the Grade 10 students in PHINMA – University of Pangasinan.

More specifically , it seeks to answer the following questions :

1) What are the profiles of the respondents?

2) Is there a significant impact of Facebook to the Academic Performance of the
Grade 10 students ?
3) Is there a significant difference between the academic performance of the students
that uses Facebook often and those who seldomly use Facebook?
In relation to the forgoing problems the study will test the following hypothesis in its null
form at the 0.5 level of significance:

1) There is no significant impact of Facebook to the academic performance of the

Grade 10 students.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter presents literatures and studies related to the present study that
guided the researcher in the formulation of the conceptual framework as developed from
different related literatures. It is noted that there is a dearth of studies along this area.

Facebook

Social networking sites let individuals to present themselves, and begin or keep
connections with others. The extremely popular social network site for students in
different levels, Facebook, has already printed a big impact on their lives. The site can be
used towards work-related contexts, romantic relationship commencement and
connecting those with shared interest. Members may use the site to mingle with people
they already know offline or to find new friends. Facebook permits its users to present
themselves in an Internet profile, build up “friends” who can post comments on each
other’s walls, and view each other’s page. Facebook associates can also join groups based
on common interests, see what things they have in common, and learn each other’s
hobbies, interests, favorite music, and romantic relationship status through their
pages.(Avilla, 2011)

Facebook brings different things to the lives of the members especially to the
students.

Facebook as stated by Avila , is one of the necessity of the modern day students.
The lives of the students revolves around the Internet and everything that comes with it.
Social Media sites are now vital components in a students academic performance .

According to studies, Facebook has an impact to students. Some students are using it for
educational purposes. Students would like to do some online collaboration with
classmates. It is said that using Facebook boosts students’ self-esteem even more.
They would feel belongingness in the community compared to those who do not have
accounts. It also provides news on what are happening in the real world and even in their
school campuses. On the other hand, negative effects flourish. It was found that “social
media addiction” and it is quite true in using Facebook. Are you addicted to Facebook?
Some would say “yes” and some would say “no”. It depends on the level of cravings.
But in the recent study, it was found that a lot students are by now addict to it, to the
extent that their school performance is affected.

“Children who spend much of their time online find it harder to focus in class and
have short attention span “researchers found through the samples that 7 out of 10 teachers
believed that their students are becoming obsessed with social media sites such as
Facebook. Their students tend to study while using Facebook and it shows that they got
20% lower grades. Facebook –using students even perform task (projects or assignments)
without completion for the reason that they spend more time scrolling down on their
newsfeed to see updates about their friends and look up for their notifications rather than
finishing their school task.

With the rampant use of all social networking sites, students are coming loose to
the real associates. Facebook chats and posts would make them busy nowadays. They
may be connected to many people but they somehow disconnect with the important
aspects of their lives and one of those is [Link] belief of meeting people face to
face seems very odd. Students prefer to send and receive instant messages or post
messages through Facebook.

Many other elements could be the reason for the inattention in studies of
students. But somehow social networks like Facebook have a negative impact on the
education of some students. Facebook could make students vain for better or for worse
and it is the parents’ obligation to watch and guide their children to get the utmost good
benefits from Facebook.( Avilla ,2011)
Academic Performance

Over the past century, academic performance has become the gatekeeper to
institutions of higher education, shaping career paths and individual life trajectories.
Accordingly, much psychological research has focused on identifying predictors of
academic performance, with intelligence and effort emerging as core determinants. In this
article, we propose expanding on the traditional set of predictors by adding a third
agency: intellectual curiosity. A series of path models based on a meta-analytically
derived correlation matrix showed that (a) intelligence is the single most powerful
predictor of academic performance; (b) the effects of intelligence on academic
performance are not mediated by personality traits; (c) intelligence, Conscientiousness
(as marker of effort), and Typical Intellectual Engagement (as marker of intellectual
curiosity) are direct, correlated predictors of academic performance; and (d) the additive
predictive effect of the personality traits of intellectual curiosity and effort rival that the
influence of intelligence. Our results highlight that a “hungry mind” is a core determinant
of individual differences in academic achievement.(Stumm, 2011)

REVIEW OF RELATED STUDIES

Foreign

Facebook being at the forefront of the social media craze, has over 500 million
active users on its website every month. It is emerged on February 4, 2004, when a 19-
year-old sophomore Harvard student named Mark Zukerberg founded the revolutionary
site to connect Harvard University students. But later, this site allows users to build social
networks with hundreds or even thousands of people around the world of which
university students are one of the primary demographics using Facebook, with features
such as photos, wall posts, and status updates becoming seemingly irresistible to those
who want to connect with their friends (Gold, 2011).

Even though Facebook is by now used by a much wider variety of users,

university students are still its “biggest fans”. Results from a recent paper Ellison et al.
(2007) reported that 94% of College students are active Facebook users, spending 60-90
minutes online each day communicating with their Friends List of 150-200 people.
Similarly, Wiley and Sisson conducted a large survey on college students from
universities in the developing countries indicated that 91% of students use the Facebook.
Ethiopia is also one of developing countries has intoxicated with around one million
users of Facebook in which half of them are higher education students (Kassashow, 2012)

Though this social network generates billions of dollars for the developer and
assists to contact a relatives detached for long period of time within fraction of seconds, it
has impact on the users in general and on students’ academic performance in particular.
(Bedassa, 2014 )

Local

Social networking sites, most notably Facebook have become so popular today
that they are leading words on the lips of every student. You love to spend most of your
time checking your Facebook updates, but do you know that there are many negative
effects of using Facebook?

Most of the students don’t realize the negative effects impacts of Facebook on
their life. And, the main reason is because they are already addicted to it. And, its
addiction can lead to several negative developments.

Facebook is beneficial to one’s life because they can continuously stay in contact
with their friends and relatives, while others say that it can cause increased antisocial
tendencies because people are not directly communicating with each other. But some
argue that Facebook has affected the social life and activity of people in various ways.
With its availability on many mobile devices, Facebook allows users to continuously stay
in touch with friends, relatives and other acquaintances wherever they are in the world, as
long as there is access to the internet. It can also unite people with common interests
and/or beliefs through groups and other pages, and has been known to reunite lost family
members and friends because of the widespread reach of its network.
Facebook also continues to prompt debate about user’s behavior. The effects of
online activities on themselves and their interactions with others have been discussed
extensively. In particular, students are a main class of Facebook users who spend long
hours on the social network, which has worried parents and educational authorities about
their academic performance. The students themselves argue that their presence on
Facebook, as a leisure activity, does not hinder their academic performance, though some
evidence suggests that their grades decline after they join Facebook. (Paculan, 2012 )

Although some research has shown a negative relation between Facebook use and
academic performance , more recent research suggests that this relation is likely caused
by excessive use of Facebook .This study examined the time students spent with
Facebook, as well as the activities engaged in on the site. The result showed that the
academic performance of the 4th year female students of the School of Education was not
affected . Thier GPA remained constant. Time spent on Facebook was negatively
predictive of GPA for the $th year male students of the School of Education but only for
a few. The results are discussed in relation for the ideas future researchers are
provided.(Alondres , et al., 2017-2018)

In the advent of internet technology, social communication using the internet

became the frontier of daily communication, collaboration and networking. This frontier
is delineated by many social networking websites and portals. This study was conducted
to determine the effects of Social Networking Sites (SNSs) on students’ academic
performance in Lyceum of the Philippines – Laguna. To determine the effects of SNSs on
academic performance, the researcher used the descriptive correlational method of
research. An online survey questionnaire designed using Google docs was distributed to
203 randomly-selected studentrespondents from the six colleges in Lyceum of the
Philippines – Laguna. The study found out that all students in Lyceum of the Philippines
– Laguna have Facebook accounts and were significantly registered to more than one
SNSs account. The results of the study showed a statistically significant positive
relationship between time spent by students on SNSs and their academic performance.
The student-respondents tended to use SNSs to interact with their friends and not use for
academic reasons. Specifically, the study found out that the higher the time spent on
SNSs showed the lower is the time spent on studying. Hence, correlation analysis showed
an inverse relationship between the GPA and the number of SNSs accounts being
maintained by the students, the frequency of SNSs use, since when they have SNSs,
length of SNSs use, and the number of study hours. The results revealed that as these
mentioned variables increases, the GPA also increases, showing that SNSs had made a
contribution in the attainment of higher grades. However, such relationships are not
significant. Therefore, the study found that SNSs usage had no significant relationship on
student academic performance. The improvement in the grade relies on other factors
within the teaching-learning process and thus could not be attributed to the use of SNS
alone.( Morallo, 2013-2014)
Chapter 3
METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the research design, the subjects and locale of the study, the
data gathering instrument, the data gathering procedure and the statistical treatment of
data.

Research Design

“Impact of Facebook in the Academic Performance of the Grade 10 students in

PHINMA – University of Pangasinan, A. Y. 2018-2019.” was tested using the
Correlational – descriptive probability test. Based on the said problem, it is clear that its
focus is on the impacts of Facebook to the students and how this certain social media site
affects the Academic Performance of the students. Quantitative research was used
because it provides more accurate ideas for more intending quantitative research.

Respondents of the Study

The respondents of the study are the selected Grade 10 students of PHINMA-
University of Pangasinan, A.Y. [Link] the Slovin’s Formula , the respondents
of our study also known as the sample size was computed . 34 out of the total population
of our selected section of Grade 10 were the respondents that represented the majority of
the Grade 10 students .Systematic probability sampling was also used to identify the
every kth element in our sample frame .

Locale of the Study

The study was conducted inside the premises of PHINMA-University of

Pangasinan , Main Campus . The study is specifically concerned on the Academic
Performance of the Grade 10 – Ptolemy(section) students currently enrolled in the said
campus , the target population resides on the Basic Education Building.

Data Gathering Instrument

The Data Gathering Instrument used was a Likert-scale questionnaire. This tool
was used to assess the respondent’s opinions and experiences. These tool was also used
in order to determine the factors or certain reasons regarding our research , or study. This
instrument produces more accurate numerical results or responses.

Data Gathering Procedure

Seeking permission to conduct the study. Before going on with the research, it's
the researchers' job to go over the Basic Education Principal, Ma’am Anna Kristina
Saldana, for them to be able to go on and administer their distribution of the research
questionnaires to their respective respondents. The letters are also signed by the
moderator of subject teacher for further confirmation .

Preparation of the questionnaires. After the researchers formulated their research

questionnaires, further validation, checking and confirmation was done before being
distributed to the respondents. The inclusion of the letter to the respondents is very
essential . This serves as a permission and a proof of confidentiality.

Statistical Treatment of Data

The study seeks to assess the relationship between the independent variable (
impact of Facebook) and the dependent variable( student’s Academic Performance) , for
this reason , the Correlational test that tests how change in the predictor
variable(independent) predicts the level of change in the outcome variable(dependent).

The information gathered were tallied , tabulated and processed manually and
with the aid of computer to determine the precise interpretation of the results.
Tally sheets were made to organize , summarize and analyze the data gathered for
easy determination of its relevance and differences from each other.

Data were collected , tabulated and analyzed using the statistical tools below:

1) Percentage
To describe the profile of the respondents, the percentage will be
computed. The measure of dominant quantity was utilized to determine the most
probable scenario.

Formula :

P = F/N × 100

Where:

P = Percentage (%)

F = Frequency

N = Total number of population

2) The responses to the questions or statements in the given variables were scaled
using the “ five-point-scale” or Likert Scale system and given weights as
follows:

VERBAL
RATE INTERPRETATION RANGE
5 Strongly Agree 4.6-5.0

4 Agree 3.6-4.5
3 Somewhat Agree 2.6-3.5

2 Disagree 1.6-2.5

1 Strongly Disagree 1.0-1.5

3) The process of finding the Average Weighted Mean was used. The formula was
given below:

X1W1+X2W2+X3W3+X4W4+X5W5
WM=
N
Where:

WM = Weighted Mean

W = weighted factor

X = frequency ( score)

N = total number of respondents

4) The sample size was computed using the Slovin’s Formula as shown below :

Formula
N
n=
1+N(e)2
where:

n = sample size

N = population size

e = desired margin of error ( 0.05 )

The section of Grade 10 – Ptolemy is composed of 39 students therefore:

N = 37
37
e = 0.05 n=
1+(37)(0.05)2
n=?
n = 33.8
Since the sample size should be a whole number , we rounded of the computed sample
size and derived n = 34

sex and time spent on Facebook.

The data are presented using tables in accordance to the sequencing of the sub-

problems under the Statement of the Problem portion in Chapter 1.

Research Questions

This study aims to determine the Impact of Facebook in the Academic

Performance of the Grade 10 students in PHINMA – University of Pangasinan.

More specifically , it seeks to answer the following questions :

4) What are the profiles of the respondents?

5) Is there a significant impact of Facebook to the Academic Performance of the

Grade 10 students ?
6) Is there a significant difference between the academic performance of the students

that uses Facebook often and those who seldomly use Facebook?

Research Hypothesis

In relation to the foregoing problems the study will test the following hypothesis in its

null form at the .05 level of significance:

2) There is no significant impact of Facebook to the academic performance of the

Grade 10 students.

Table 1. As seen on the table above , 7 out of our 34 respondents strongly agreed

that Facebook affects the time they spend on studying for their lessons. 9 agreed , 10

somewhat agreed , 4 disagreed and 4 strongly disagreed. We therefore conclude that most

of our respondents somewhat agree to the statement given , they neither deny nor

recognize that Facebook affects their time for studying their lessons. The percentage of

the respondents who answered agree are also significant because it is a huge percent that

shows agreement to the statement .

Probability testing

Correlational- Descriptive

After computing the average weighted means of the two variables and computing

for the correlation through Microsoft Excel . We can now either accept or reject our

research hyphothesis.

In relation to the forgoing problems the study will test the following hypothesis in its

null form at the 0.5 level of significance:

1) There is no significant impact of Facebook to the academic performance of

the Grade 10 students.

Computed Correlation : 0.096954

The correlation coefficient of our study falls under very strong correlation . Thus ,

makes our hyphothesis invalid . We , therefore reject the null hyphothesis that states :
There is no significant impact of Facebook to the academic performance of the

Grade 10 students.

The correlation between the variables Facebook and Academic Performance is

very strong which means that there is a significant impact of Facebook to the academic

performance of the Grade 10 students. The positive correlation also implies that when

one variable increases the other variable also increases.

SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter summarizes the findings of the study. It also drafts conclusions and

recommendations based on the findings.

Summary

This study aims to determine the Impact of Facebook in the Academic

Performance of the Grade 10 students in PHINMA – University of Pangasinan.

More specifically , it seeks to answer the following questions :

1) What are the profiles of the respondents?

2) Is there a significant impact of Facebook to the Academic Performance of the

Grade 10 students ?

3) Is there a significant difference between the academic performance of the students

that uses Facebook often and those who seldomly use Facebook?

The methodology are probability test specifically correlational-descriptive

probability test . The respondents of the study are the selected Grade 10 students of

PHINMA-University of Pangasinan, A.Y. 2018-2019. The study was conducted inside

the premises of PHINMA-University of Pangasinan , Main Campus . The study is

specifically concerned on the Academic Performance of the Grade 10 – Ptolemy(section)

students currently enrolled in the said campus , the target population resides on the Basic

Education Building. The Data Gathering Instrument used was a Likert-scale

questionnaire. The data gathering procedure starts with (1)Seeking permission to conduct

the study,(2) Preparation of the questionnaires. The statistical treatment of Data that we

used are : 1)Percentage, 2) The Likert-scale system , 3) Average Weighted Mean ,and 4)

Systematic Probability Sampling , 5) The Slovin’s Formula .

The following are the salient findings of the study:

1. Age of the respondents

50 % of our respondents are ages 13-15 years old while the other 50 % are

ages 16-18. The age of the respondent were equally distributed , thus,

makes the comparison and contrast among our respondent who shares the

same age bracket can be equally represented , analyzed and interpreted .

2. Sex of the Respondents

56% of our respondents are males while the other 44% are females. The

comparison between the two sexes is a somehow difficult because unlike

the percentages stated on Table I , the percentages stated in the table above

is not equal. There are 6% more male respondents than female

respondents.

3. Hour spent by the respondents in using Facebook

20.6% of our respondents spends 10-15 minutes scrolling, posting ,

updating , sharing , searching or visiting Facebook . None of the uses

Facebook for exactly 30 minutes. 26.4% uses Facebook for 30 minutes to

1 hour. The other 53% uses Facebook for more than 1 hour. Therefore, we

can conclude that majority of our respondents spends more than 1 hour in

using Facebook.
4. Facebook

4.1 The researchers' assume that Facebook affects the time of respondent

spend on studying in weighted mean of 0.29.

4.2 The researchers assume that Facebook affects the concentration of

respondents while reviewing in the weighted mean of 0.32.

4.3 The researchers' assume that respondents still use Facebook even they

have more important projects to do in computed weighted mean of .38

4.4 The researchers' assume that the respondents use Facebook

before, during, and after their classes in calculated weighted mean of

.35

4.5 The researchers' assume that the respondents recently used Facebook

in calculated weighted mean of .35

4.6 The researchers' assume that the Facebook helps the respondents to

create new ideas and concepts that can be very useful to them in

calculated weighted mean of .35

5. Academic Performance

5.1 The researchers' assume that the respondents did well on their recent

activities and examinations in computed weighted mean of .41.

5.2 The researchers assume that the respondents can concentrate during

their classes in computed weighted mean of .47.

5.3 The researchers' assume that the respondents can accomplished their

reports and requirements immediately in computed weighted mean of

.41.
5.4 The researchers' assume that the respondents participate actively

during class discussions in computed weighted mean of .44.

5.5 The researchers' assume that the respondents efficiently communicate

with their classmates during group works or presentation in

computed weighted mean of .56.

5.6 The researchers' assume that whenever the teacher asks the

respondents, they can answer the question confidently in computed

weighted mean of .47.

Conclusions

Based on the findings of the study, the following conclusions were drawn:

1. According to the summary,10/15 females uses Facebook for more than 1 hour

while 8/19 males uses facebook for more than 1 hour. This implies that female

grade students uses facebook more than males does.

2. The student ages 16-18 tends to use facebook more than student ages 13-15

3. According to the statement no. 3 under Facebook, the respondends somewhat

agree that they still used Facebook even if they have more important projects to

do. The contrary stated in interpretation under Academic Performance, the

respondents can accomplish reports and requirements immediately very often . It

implies that Facebook affects the Academic Performance of Grade 10 students

positively .

4. According to the statement no. 4 under Facebook, the respondends strongly agree

that they used Facebook before, during, and after their classes. The contrary

stated in interpretation under Academic Performance, the respondends can always

concentrate during classes. It implies that Facebook affect the Academic

Performance of Grade 10 students positively .

Recommendations

Based on the above findings and conclusions of the study, the following

recommendations are offered:

For students

1. Students should always prioritize their studies

2. Students should create a schedule for the things they should do.

3. Students should limit their time when using facebook

4. Students should not use facebook when reviewing

5. Students should always do their projects first before using Facebook.

6. Students should be responsible when using Facebook.

For parents

1. Parents should monitor their children about using of facebook

2. Parents should remind their children to do their important things before using

facebook

3. Parents should know if what are the effects of too much using of Facebook to

their children.

4. Parents should have a rule at home when to use Facebook.

For teachers

1. Teacher should encourage the students to lessen the usage of facebook

2. Teachers should teach their students on how the usage of facebook can affect

them if they often use it.
