Chapter 1
INTRODUCTION
Today’s communication mediums are used worldwide, people can access the
internet using gadgets by establishing a connection to a server, a WiFi or using data from
different networks. Social media is around at every corner of a person’s life, it used at
every little thing a person do .
“Social media is a phrase that we throw around a lot these days, often to describe
what we post on sites and apps like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and others.”
The "social" part: refers to interacting with other people by sharing information with
them and receiving information from them. The "media" part: refers to an instrument of
communication, like the internet (while TV, radio, and newspapers are examples of more
traditional forms of media). From these two separate terms, we can pull a basic
definition together: Social media are web-based communication tools that enable people
to interact with each other by both sharing and consuming information ( Nations, 2017).
Numerous researchers tried to analyze the factor that triggered the massive
dispersion and use of Social media across the globe.
One of the most popular social media site is Facebook. It is a free social
networking Web platform that promotes and facilitates interaction between friends,
family and colleagues. Facebook was founded in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg and several
Harvard University classmates (Techopedia,nd).
Facebook is a social networking website and service where users can post
comments, share photographs and links to news or other interesting content on the
Web,and also you can give reactions, play games, chat live, and stream live video. You
can even do buy and sell with Facebook. Shared content can be made publicly accessible,
or it can be shared only among a select group of friends or family, or with a single
person.
Online social networking has become an integral part of the lives of Philippines'
teenagers with 73% of teens reporting that they use social networking site such as
Facebook daily (Lenhart, Purcell, Smith, & Zickuhr, 2010). Some recent studies have
shown a negative relationship between Facebook use and academic achievement (
Karpinski & Duberstein, 2009), while other studies have shown no relationship between
Facebook and Academic achievement (Pasek, More, & Hargittaai, 2009). Thus, parents,
teachers, and administrators remain uncertain of the effects, if any, of students using
Facebook.
The dynamism and strength of social media has a huge impact in our daily lives .
However, threats are also present to the individuals who are involved in using social
media [Link], House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez wants to regulate the use of
social media by mandating social media companies to verify the users before they are
allowed to open their respective accounts.
In many occasions, users use fake accounts by presenting themselves to the online world
as persons whom they are not. This is a classic case of identity theft that is detrimental to
society,he said in filing House Bill 5021.
HB 5021 or the proposed Social Media Regulation Act of 2017, provides that
applicants for social media accounts be subjected by social media networks to effective
identity verification in order to ascertain the authentic of an account. The applications of
those found out as presenting himself as another person whom he is not shall be denied
and the user accounts of other persons the authenticity of which are subsequently
discovered as compromised shall be [Link] proposed bill seeks to afford a
remedial measures on the foregoing matters and will regulate these social media by
mandating social media companies (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc.) to reasonably
verify the identity of user applicants before they are allowed to open an account.
Penalties are also provided for failure to comply with this verification requirement.
Violators of the proposed Act shall be punished with imprisonment of not less
than six years and one day up to 12 years and a fine ranging from P30,000 to P50,000.
Any person who owns or has control over artificial intelligence programs or similar
programs that create social media user accounts that results in the irresponsible use of
social media shall held liable.
As of 2018 , there huge increase in the number of Facebook users, the age range
are dropping , even six years olds are capable of using Facebook. There are many
possible ways of using Facebook : (as a form of communication, entertainment, learning
medium or material, information disseminator etc.) and there are many possible effects
of Facebook in the Academic Perfomance of a Grade 10 student, it can be positive or
negative depending on the purpose it serves to a certain student.
On the brighter face , using Facebook wisely can be very benefecial , it can be an
information dissemennator that is the primary use of social media. Using Facebook, a
student can catch updates regarding topics that might be very essential in his/her
developement or in his/ her studies. Students can also communicate to groups of people ,
in need for an emergency meeting or important discussion , the group don’t necessarily
need to meet up in personaly which will cost a lot of time , effort and money, instead they
can communicate with each other through group chats or group video calls that was made
available by Facebook.
This extensively used social media site is becoming an essential factor in every
student’s life. Given the fact that Facebook is now part of every student’s lives , it is
guaranteed that it can and will certainly affect one’s Academic Performance.
Given that Facebook is one of the most influencial social media sites. Curiosity
and relevance to a student’s daily life driven by our eagerness to know things that is
related to our interest is the very reason why , pondering on the topic that involves
Facebook and Academic Performance turned out to be the suited topic for our research .
Efforts will soon be rewarded with benefits that this research will cite . The results of this
study will not only benefit the students , but also the parents and teachers that are the
future readers.
It is clear that Facebook as one of the most well known social media site can cause
different Impacts on the Academic Performance of the Grade 10 Students of PHINMA
University of Pangasinan ,in various ways .
This study aims to determine the Impact of Facebook in the Academic Performance of
the Grade 10 students in PHINMA – University of Pangasinan.
The priority of this study is only limited to the Grade 10 students that are officially
enrolled in PHINMA- University of Pangasinan,Main Campus,A.Y. 18-19, students who
owns and maintains a Facebook account and the impacts of Facebook to their academic
performance. The results of this study may not relate or may not be applicable to all
Grade 10 students and to those who do not own or maintain a Facebook account .
Conceptual Framework
Dependent Variable
Independent Variable
Figure 1 is the research paradigm of the present study showing the relationship of the
variables involved. The independent variable is the impact of Facebook. The dependent
variable is the Student’s Academic Performance.
Students .Students are the main benefactors of these study , simply because it aims to
determine the impact of Facebook to their Academic Performance . Through this study ,
the students will be knowledgeable enough to minimize the negative impacts of Facebook
and maximize the positive impacts.
[Link] study also aims to increase the awareness of the parents about the positive
and negative results of letting their child/children own and maintain Facebook accounts ,
and the impact of this actions to their child/childrens Academic Performance .
Teachers .This results of this study can serve as a guide or idea for the teachers who
wishes to incorporate Facebook or other social media applications as one of their
teaching medium. The results will cite the possible negative effects that the teachers will
have to avoid or prevent. It can also help the teachers in developing new approaches in
teaching .
Future Researchers . This study can serve as a guide or reference for the future
researchers who will choose to ponder upon the same or related research topic as ours. It
can help them to easily narrow down and sort datas because summarized results are to be
presented in this study .
Definition of Terms
For clarity of ideas, the following terms are defined according to how they are used in the
study:
5) Minimize – lessen
11) Facebook - a social media application that is oftenly used by the present
generation. It allows the user to post and share ideas and concepts, allows the user
to react and comment on the posted or shared contents .
This chapter presents literatures and studies related to the present study that
guided the researcher in the formulation of the conceptual framework as developed from
different related literatures. It is noted that there is a dearth of studies along this area.
Social networking sites let individuals to present themselves, and begin or keep
connections with others. The extremely popular social network site for students in
different levels, Facebook, has already printed a big impact on their lives. The site can be
used towards work-related contexts, romantic relationship commencement and
connecting those with shared interest. Members may use the site to mingle with people
they already know offline or to find new friends. Facebook permits its users to present
themselves in an Internet profile, build up “friends” who can post comments on each
other’s walls, and view each other’s page. Facebook associates can also join groups based
on common interests, see what things they have in common, and learn each other’s
hobbies, interests, favorite music, and romantic relationship status through their
pages.(Avilla, 2011)
Facebook brings different things to the lives of the members especially to the
students.
Facebook as stated by Avila , is one of the necessity of the modern day students.
The lives of the students revolves around the Internet and everything that comes with it.
Social Media sites are now vital components in a students academic performance .
According to studies, Facebook has an impact to students. Some students are using it for
educational purposes. Students would like to do some online collaboration with
classmates. It is said that using Facebook boosts students’ self-esteem even more.
They would feel belongingness in the community compared to those who do not have
accounts. It also provides news on what are happening in the real world and even in their
school campuses. On the other hand, negative effects flourish. It was found that “social
media addiction” and it is quite true in using Facebook. Are you addicted to Facebook?
Some would say “yes” and some would say “no”. It depends on the level of cravings.
But in the recent study, it was found that a lot students are by now addict to it, to the
extent that their school performance is affected.
“Children who spend much of their time online find it harder to focus in class and
have short attention span “researchers found through the samples that 7 out of 10 teachers
believed that their students are becoming obsessed with social media sites such as
Facebook. Their students tend to study while using Facebook and it shows that they got
20% lower grades. Facebook –using students even perform task (projects or assignments)
without completion for the reason that they spend more time scrolling down on their
newsfeed to see updates about their friends and look up for their notifications rather than
finishing their school task.
With the rampant use of all social networking sites, students are coming loose to
the real associates. Facebook chats and posts would make them busy nowadays. They
may be connected to many people but they somehow disconnect with the important
aspects of their lives and one of those is [Link] belief of meeting people face to
face seems very odd. Students prefer to send and receive instant messages or post
messages through Facebook.
Many other elements could be the reason for the inattention in studies of
students. But somehow social networks like Facebook have a negative impact on the
education of some students. Facebook could make students vain for better or for worse
and it is the parents’ obligation to watch and guide their children to get the utmost good
benefits from Facebook.( Avilla ,2011)
Academic Performance
Over the past century, academic performance has become the gatekeeper to
institutions of higher education, shaping career paths and individual life trajectories.
Accordingly, much psychological research has focused on identifying predictors of
academic performance, with intelligence and effort emerging as core determinants. In this
article, we propose expanding on the traditional set of predictors by adding a third
agency: intellectual curiosity. A series of path models based on a meta-analytically
derived correlation matrix showed that (a) intelligence is the single most powerful
predictor of academic performance; (b) the effects of intelligence on academic
performance are not mediated by personality traits; (c) intelligence, Conscientiousness
(as marker of effort), and Typical Intellectual Engagement (as marker of intellectual
curiosity) are direct, correlated predictors of academic performance; and (d) the additive
predictive effect of the personality traits of intellectual curiosity and effort rival that the
influence of intelligence. Our results highlight that a “hungry mind” is a core determinant
of individual differences in academic achievement.(Stumm, 2011)
Foreign
Facebook being at the forefront of the social media craze, has over 500 million
active users on its website every month. It is emerged on February 4, 2004, when a 19-
year-old sophomore Harvard student named Mark Zukerberg founded the revolutionary
site to connect Harvard University students. But later, this site allows users to build social
networks with hundreds or even thousands of people around the world of which
university students are one of the primary demographics using Facebook, with features
such as photos, wall posts, and status updates becoming seemingly irresistible to those
who want to connect with their friends (Gold, 2011).
Though this social network generates billions of dollars for the developer and
assists to contact a relatives detached for long period of time within fraction of seconds, it
has impact on the users in general and on students’ academic performance in particular.
(Bedassa, 2014 )
Local
Social networking sites, most notably Facebook have become so popular today
that they are leading words on the lips of every student. You love to spend most of your
time checking your Facebook updates, but do you know that there are many negative
effects of using Facebook?
Most of the students don’t realize the negative effects impacts of Facebook on
their life. And, the main reason is because they are already addicted to it. And, its
addiction can lead to several negative developments.
Facebook is beneficial to one’s life because they can continuously stay in contact
with their friends and relatives, while others say that it can cause increased antisocial
tendencies because people are not directly communicating with each other. But some
argue that Facebook has affected the social life and activity of people in various ways.
With its availability on many mobile devices, Facebook allows users to continuously stay
in touch with friends, relatives and other acquaintances wherever they are in the world, as
long as there is access to the internet. It can also unite people with common interests
and/or beliefs through groups and other pages, and has been known to reunite lost family
members and friends because of the widespread reach of its network.
Facebook also continues to prompt debate about user’s behavior. The effects of
online activities on themselves and their interactions with others have been discussed
extensively. In particular, students are a main class of Facebook users who spend long
hours on the social network, which has worried parents and educational authorities about
their academic performance. The students themselves argue that their presence on
Facebook, as a leisure activity, does not hinder their academic performance, though some
evidence suggests that their grades decline after they join Facebook. (Paculan, 2012 )
Although some research has shown a negative relation between Facebook use and
academic performance , more recent research suggests that this relation is likely caused
by excessive use of Facebook .This study examined the time students spent with
Facebook, as well as the activities engaged in on the site. The result showed that the
academic performance of the 4th year female students of the School of Education was not
affected . Thier GPA remained constant. Time spent on Facebook was negatively
predictive of GPA for the $th year male students of the School of Education but only for
a few. The results are discussed in relation for the ideas future researchers are
provided.(Alondres , et al., 2017-2018)
This chapter presents the research design, the subjects and locale of the study, the
data gathering instrument, the data gathering procedure and the statistical treatment of
data.
Research Design
The respondents of the study are the selected Grade 10 students of PHINMA-
University of Pangasinan, A.Y. [Link] the Slovin’s Formula , the respondents
of our study also known as the sample size was computed . 34 out of the total population
of our selected section of Grade 10 were the respondents that represented the majority of
the Grade 10 students .Systematic probability sampling was also used to identify the
every kth element in our sample frame .
The Data Gathering Instrument used was a Likert-scale questionnaire. This tool
was used to assess the respondent’s opinions and experiences. These tool was also used
in order to determine the factors or certain reasons regarding our research , or study. This
instrument produces more accurate numerical results or responses.
Seeking permission to conduct the study. Before going on with the research, it's
the researchers' job to go over the Basic Education Principal, Ma’am Anna Kristina
Saldana, for them to be able to go on and administer their distribution of the research
questionnaires to their respective respondents. The letters are also signed by the
moderator of subject teacher for further confirmation .
The study seeks to assess the relationship between the independent variable (
impact of Facebook) and the dependent variable( student’s Academic Performance) , for
this reason , the Correlational test that tests how change in the predictor
variable(independent) predicts the level of change in the outcome variable(dependent).
The information gathered were tallied , tabulated and processed manually and
with the aid of computer to determine the precise interpretation of the results.
Tally sheets were made to organize , summarize and analyze the data gathered for
easy determination of its relevance and differences from each other.
Data were collected , tabulated and analyzed using the statistical tools below:
1) Percentage
To describe the profile of the respondents, the percentage will be
computed. The measure of dominant quantity was utilized to determine the most
probable scenario.
Formula :
P = F/N × 100
Where:
P = Percentage (%)
F = Frequency
2) The responses to the questions or statements in the given variables were scaled
using the “ five-point-scale” or Likert Scale system and given weights as
follows:
