CELEBRATING PEANUT BUTTER -- November is Peanut Butter Lovers Month, time to celebrate our favorite food!
Americans will celebrate by eating more than 65-70 million pounds of peanut butter during the month of November. Southern
Peanut Growers, representing southeastern peanut farmers, started the celebration as Peanut Butter Lovers Day on November 4,
1990. November 4 marks the anniversary of the first patent for peanut butter, applied for by Dr. John Harvey Kellogg on November 4,
1895. It grew to a month-long celebration in 1995 when peanut butter celebrated its 100 th birthday!
NOVEMBER HAS THE 30/30 PEANUT CHALLENGE – The Peanut Institute is sponsoring the 30/30 Peanut Challenge during
the 30 days of November. By eating just one serving of peanuts or peanut butter per day for 30 days, you’ll get more of the nutrients
we normally miss out on, along with protection against heart disease, certain cancers, Alzheimer’s disease and more.

PEANUT STOCKS AND PROCESSING REPORT– USDA’s Peanut Stocks and Processing Report was released October 29, 2019
for the month of September 2019, the 2nd month of the new marketing year.
Peanut stocks in commercial storage as of September 30, 2019 totaled 2.44 billion pounds equivalent farmer stock,
compared to 2.59 billion pounds last year, DOWN 5.8%. This total includes 1.70 billion pounds of actual farmer stock. Shelled
peanuts on hand farmer stock equivalent totaled 707 million pounds, DOWN 3.8%. Roasted stocks were 32.0 million pounds,
DOWN 33.5%.
Total shelled peanut stocks showed 532 million pounds, DOWN 3.8% with edible grades reaching 508 million pounds.
Oil stocks totaled 23.8 million pounds, DOWN 2.5% from one year ago.
Edible stocks of shelled peanuts by type, Virginia & Valencia stocks are at 96.7 million pounds, 34% more than last year.
runners were 361 million pounds, DOWN 11.7% and Spanish totaled 50.9 million lbs, UP 7.6% from last year.
In September, shellers milled 374 million pounds, UP 8.1% from September of last year.
Commercial processors used 194 million pounds of shelled edible peanuts, 3.7% MORE than last September.
Government purchases for Nutrition Programs in September totaled 4,326,705 million lbs of peanut butter & roasted
peanuts, UP 66.6%. For the first two months, government purchases are up 108.6% compared to last year.

Congratulations. The peanut nation is off to a great start for the first two month, up 2.9% with peanut butter leading the charge up
3.9%. All categories showed positive increases for the month of September, compared to last year. Let’s keep the ball rolling and set
new records in 2019-20.
USDA AMC SELLS FORFEITED PEANUTS – Peanuts sold under the Peanut Invitation NO. 12 have been announced. Lot # 32
totaling 1,147 tons of Virginia type were sold to Georgia Farm Services of Dublin, NC for $332.50 per ton. Lot #40 totaling 2,698
tons of Virginia type were sold for $335 per ton to Golden Grove USA, Inc in Mount Olive, NC.

DID YOU KNOW? - This year is the 100th anniversary of the Boll Weevil Monument in downtown Enterprise, Alabama, which
was erected to show appreciation to the insect, as it changed farming from cotton to peanuts. Growing peanuts brought prosperity to the
farmers as the boll weevil devastated the cotton crop and the agricultural economy. The boll weevil caused farmers to switch from
growing cotton to peanuts.
A story is told that H.M. Sessions of the Enterprise Mule Company loaned C.W. Baston of Coffee County, Alabama enough
money to go buy peanut seed to plant since he had lost his cotton crop to the boll weevil the previous year. He paid back the loan and
had enough money to farm again. In 1915, the Enterprise called H. M. Sessions a “champion for the cause of the peanut – one of
our greatest.” Thus, in 1915 & 1916, the Southeast peanut industry was born. The monument was dedicated on December 11, 1919 at
the intersection of College and Main Street, the heart of the town’s business district. Enterprise is planning a celebration on Dec. 11 this
year for the anniversary.
