For us to have a good flow of discussion, follow this
instruction, if I say “Crystal” you say “Clear” alright
class? Let’s try, crystal? …

Let’s try again, crystal? Clear!

A. PRESENTING THE NEW LESSON

Before we start I will divide you into 4 groups. Move to

your group silently. Each group will have an envelop
called “Mystery Envelop” which contains mystery items.
You need to figure out what’s inside the envelop and
label them on how are they related to each other. (the class will be divided into 4 groups and their leader will
get their envelops)
For example, if the envelop has pot, seed, trowel, and
soil. What are those for? For planting or gardening sir.

Very good. Now I have here a cellphone, laptop, and a Products of technology sir.
projector, what are these?

Correct. Are you now ready to see the mystery items in Yes sir.
your envelops? (students open their envelops)

For group 1, what items do you have there? And what’s

the label? We have fridge, television, washing machine, and air-
conditioner sir, these are home appliances sir.

Great! How about the group 2? We have Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat sir,
Correct! Let’s have the group 3. these are social media applications.
We have Encyclopedia, Bible, English Textbook, and
Dictionary, these are reading books sir.

Very good! And lastly the group 4. We have paper, pencil, pen, and notebook, these are
school supplies sir.
Job well done class!

Now, what have you noticed from the activity you did? We noticed that you let us distinguish the connections of
the items to form an idea sir.

Exactly! Thru wisely analyzing each item, we can form

one idea that connects the whole items.

In a text, there is a sentence that states the main idea. It

summarizes the thought of a paragraph. What do you
call this sentence? It is the topic sentence sir.

Correct! That is our lesson for today.

A topic sentence is the sentence that captures the

meaning of the entire paragraph. It tells what the
passage is mainly all about.
B. ESTABLISHING A PURPOSE FOR THE LESSON

After our discussion, you should be able to:

 define what is topic sentence and its positions;

 identify the topic sentence in a reading text; and
 observe the proper way in determining the topic
sentence and controlling ideas. (the students read their goal)
C. PRESENTING EXAMPLES/INSTANCES OF THE NEW
LESSON

A topic sentence is a sentence, that can be found

sometimes at the beginning, middle or end of
paragraph which corresponds to the topic of a
paragraph.

As of what you did in our activity, there are many ways

to figure out a topic sentence:

1. It is simply the “who” or “what” being discussed in

the paragraph.

Example:
I don’t like exams. Every time I take an exam I feel
nervous. If I study, I don’t know if I will be able get good
grades. Often I worry about taking an exam and can’t
sleep. Sometimes I day dream or draw pictures in class.
If the exam is over, I always worry about my grades.
When my teacher gives the test paper to me with a
grade, I still can’t relax because I know there will still be
exams soon.

2. Look for the keywords that signal a topic sentence.

Example Keywords:
- A series of Harry Potter books was donated in an
adoption centre.
- Several kinds of hawks was nursed back to health
- The disadvantages of using cellphone was showed in
an advertisement.
- Some differences of drugs was thought by Dr. Holiday
- A couple of effects of taking Creatine is occurring in
Bernard’s body.
- A number of benefits of Whey Protein was seen on
Joshua’s physique.

3. Identify the supporting details of a topic sentence. It

is sometimes easier to find than the topic.

Example:
People do it every day. They log on to their favorite
website and browse for hours, checking out bargains.
They dump every possible wish into their shopping
carts, knowing they can cast each one aside before they
finalize their purchases. And then, when they have
decided on their purchases, they enter private
information without giving it a thought. With a
keystroke, they release their personal data into what
may or may not be a secure zone. Despite what much of
the public believes, internet shopping is not safe.

The supporting detail: checking out bargains

4. Do not assume that the topic sentence is the first

sentence of the paragraph. It is usually the first
sentence; however, it can occur anywhere in the
paragraph.

Example:
My favorite drink is tea and I drink a lot of it. I always
have tea in the morning for breakfast.I make a pot of
tea and drink it all by myself. Sometimes I have another
pot for lunch. At four o’clock, I make a cup of mint tea.
Mint tea is good for waking up and studying.
Now, where is the topic sentence located? The topic sentence is at the beginning of the paragraph sir.

Very good! So what is the topic sentence? My favorite drink is tea and I drink a lot of it is the topic
sentence sir.
That’s all the ways in determining a topic sentence. Any
questions class? None sir.
D. MAKING GENERALIZATIONS AND ABSTRACTIONS
ABOUT THE LESSON

1. Did you understand what a topic sentence is? Yes sir.

2. I will ask you some questions if you do really

understand or lesson for today.

3. What is a topic sentence? A topic sentence is a sentence, which corresponds to the

topic of a paragraph. This tells the reader the main idea of
the paragraph.

4. Enumerate 5 keywords found in a topic sentence. - A series of

- Several kinds of

- A number of

topic sentence of a paragraph? sentence of a paragraph by looking at the supporting
details that the paragraph contains.
Where can you find the topic sentence? At the beginning, or middle, or at the end of a paragraph
sir.
E. DISCUSSING NEW CONCEPTS AND PRATICING NEW
SKILLS #1

Alright. Lets try to identify topic sentence and the

supporting details in these paragraphs.

Paragraph 1

I would like to tell you about my uncle. His name is

Randy and he is 45 year-old. He is my father’s youngest
brother. I really like my Uncle Randy because he is very
kind and funny. He also tells us stories about the places
he visited.
So what is the topic sentence? I really like my Uncle Randy because he is very kind and
funny.

Good! How about the supporting detail? His name is Randy and he is 45 year-old is the supporting
detail sir.

Correct! Next paragraph.

Paragraph 2

Adventure tourism is a different way for tourists to see

New Zealand. This type of tourism uses the plentiful
natural resources- mountain, rivers, lakes, wilderness
areas and historical sites to provide adventure, thrills
and challenges which are low risk but high in
excitement, the costal areas in New Zealand are great
for canoeing and kayaking. White- water rating is
another popular water adventure tour however, if you
would rather keep your feet on the ground, New
Zealand has over 100 developed walkways in addition
to the tracks in the 12 national Parks. Because more and
more tourist are interested in learning about New
Zealand by doing exciting and unusual activities,
adventure tourism will continue to grow.

So what is the topic sentence of the paragraph? Adventure tourism is a different way for tourists to see
New Zealand is the topic sentence sir.

Very good! How about the supporting detail? This type of tourism uses the plentiful natural resources is
the supporting detail sir.
Correct! Now let’s have the last example.

Paragraph 3

The heart weighs about 11 ounces and is the size of a

clenched fist. The heart of a man performs at about 60-
80 beats per minute. In a year it beats some 40 million
times at each beat it takes nearly a quarter of a pint of
blood; in a single day it pumps 2,200 gallons of blood,
and in the course of a single lifetime about 60 million
gallons. Is there any other engine capable in carrying
out such a heavy work ever such a long period of time
without needing to be prepared? Obviously the human
heart is small yet highly efficient piece of equipment.
What is the topic sentence on this paragraph?
Obviously the human heart is small yet highly efficient
piece of equipment is the topic sentence sir.
That’s right! How about the supporting detail/s?
The heart weighs about 11 ounces and is the size of a
Correct! Now you already know how to identify the clenched fist is the supporting detail sir.
topic sentence and supporting details.
F. DISCUSSING NEW CONCEPTS AND PRACTICING NEW
SKILLS #2

Let’s have another activity. Remain with your groupings.

Write your names in a 1/4 sheet of paper. Now, I will

support the details. True False
6. The topic sentence is always the title of the
paragraph. True False
7. The topic sentence plants questions into the readers'
mind. True False
8. The topic sentence hooks the reader. True False
9. The topic sentence does not contain the central idea
of the paragraph. True False
10. The controlling idea is not connected to the topic of
the topic sentence. True False

(the teacher records the score of each group)

G. DEVELOPING MASTERY (LEADS TO FORMATIVE
ASSSESSMENT)

I will give you this worksheet. Write you answer in a 1/4

sheet of paper and you will answer this individually so
you may now go back to your proper places without
making any unnecessary noise. (the students answer the worksheet)
H. EVALUATING LEARNING

For you evaluation, answer this activity sheet in a whole

sheet of paper. (the students answer the activity sheet)
I. ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES FOR APPLICATION OR
REMIDIATION

For your assignment class. A. Follow-up

Locate the topic sentence the supporting detail.

1. I live in a small town when I was child. It was a very nice

place to live then. Now it is much bigger than before. More
people live there and some big businesses opened offices
there. My parents still live there but they say it was better
in the past.

2. There are two main advantages of living in a small town.

First, you know everyone knows you. This helps you to feel
safe, and it is friendlier. Secondly, it is quiet and there are
few cars. This means there is less population than in a big
town or city.

3. No matter how you slice it, there are only 24 hours in a

day. To be successful in a university, students need to learn
good time-management skills. The first skill is not taking on
more than you can handle. If you are a working part-time,
have a family and are involved in a community
organization, then taking a full course-at university will be
too much. Another time management skills is reasonably
estimating the time required to perform each of the task at
hand. For example, deeply reading a chapter from a course
text cannot be completed in between television
programme. Finally, actually doing what needs to be done
seems obvious, but is a very difficult skill. You may find
that cleaning out your wardrobe becomes vital when you
are avoiding study. Procrastination is a time manager’s
enemy. By learning time managements skills your
university study will be successful and most importantly
enjoyable.
