Hall Coefficient and Superconductivity Calculations

The document is a tutorial on Solid State Physics - II that contains 4 questions: 1. Derive an expression for the Hall coefficient in terms of carrier concentrations, mobilities, and masses. 2. Calculate the critical current and critical current density at 0K and 4K for a lead wire with a 5mm radius, using the critical field values provided. 3. Find the induction, diamagnetic current density, and magnetization within an infinite superconducting slab in a uniform magnetic field, and derive the susceptibility for thick and thin slabs. 4. Solid State Physics - II

Tutorial: 06 Date: 26-29 Aug. 2019

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Assuming concentration n, p; relaxation times e, h; and masses me, mh show
that the Hall coefficient in the drift velocity approximation is

RH = 1/ec [(p-nb2)/(p+nb)2]

Where, b = µe/µh is the mobility ratio.

2. Calculate the critical current and critical current density at 0 K for a long wire of
Pb which has a circular cross-section of radius 5 mm. Critical field for Pb at 0 K is
803 X 10-4 Tesla. Also, calculate the critical current density at 4 K. Tc for Pb is
7.193 K.

3. Consider an infinite superconducting slab bounded by two parallel planes

perpendicular to Y axis at Y = ± d. Let a uniform magnetic field, B applied along z-
axis. Taking the boundary condition that the parallel component of B continues at
the surface, find the induction B, the diamagnetic current density J and the
magnetization density M at a point with in the superconductor. Hence get the
limiting form for the susceptibility for a thick and a thin slab.

4. The London penetration depth of Nb is 65 nm and its GL coherence length is

12.3 nm. Determine whether it is Type I or II superconductor and find the value of
magnetic field for which the flux will be completely excluded from it.
