Digestive System Overview and Process

The digestive system breaks down food through a multi-step process. It begins with ingestion in the mouth, where teeth break down food into a bolus mixed with saliva from the salivary glands. The bolus then moves into the stomach through the pharynx and esophagus, where gastric juices further break it down into a liquid chyme. Chyme passes into the small intestine, where it is further broken into an absorbable chyle through the actions of intestinal juices, bile from the liver, and pancreatic juices. Nutrients are then absorbed into the bloodstream in the small intestine, while undigested waste moves into the large intestine where water is absorbed and waste is formed into feces
