3. COURSE OBJECTIVES

Students attending the course will:


• Have an understanding of the methods used for building materials removal along with
the appropriate selection, advantages and limitations of each method.
• Learn repairing and protection techniques for existing concrete structures.
• Gain familiarity with repairing materials, such as standard and non-standard repair
materials.
• Be familiar with the estimating of residual service life of reinforced concrete
structures.

4. COURSE DESCRIPTION

The course offers an intermediate level of learning about building repair and rehabilitation.
The course introduce the students into different repair and maintenance planning and
service-life evaluation for building structures. The students are planning the repairing
methods thorough historic building structure reports and conditions survey reports; and
determining the suitable repairing schemes. The course covers (i) demolition of old
building structures, (ii) corrosion protection of reinforced concrete (iii) repair methods for

concrete and rendered structures, (iv) repairing of building service systems, (v) buildings
having indoor air problems, (vi) analysis and evaluation of the service life of building
structures.
The course uses problem-based learning (PBL) with case study method, combining
activating lectures, instead of traditional lectures, and group work with independent
processing. This applies in such a way that the exercise is done with practical examples
(real cases). Activating teaching is, in practice, the introductory lecture related to different
thematic areas of the exercise.

5. LEARNING OUTCOMES

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:


1. Explain the regulations and guidelines for repairing (1.0* / 2**).
2. Classify suitable repairing methods for building structures (1.0 / 3).
3. Identify the service life of building structures (1.0 / 4).
4. Examine the repairing methods and the service life of building
structures (1.0 / 4).

6. COURSE GRADING

The grading scale for course is: 5 (highest); 4; 3; 2; 1 (lowest passing grade); 0 (failed). The
course outcome assessment include:
a) Assignment report which include (i) repairing methods and service life analysis report, (ii)
presentation, (iii) peer group report, and (iv) excursion report [Grading: 0...5; weighted
value 50% of the final grade].
b) End of the course: written exam with obligatory registration using WebOodi-portal student
[Grading: 0...5; weighted value 50% of the final grade].

7. COURSE ASSIGNMENT

- Repairing and service life analysis of a concrete building façade.


- Assignment cases will be available in the second lecture on Thu 07.01.2016.
- The assignment work for each case will be carried out with a group of maximum four
students. Each group will be assigned a peer group. Work and peer groups will be formed
in the second lecture on Thu 07.01.2016.
Work group:
· The work groups have to arrange a visit their case building façade for advanced
inspection.

· Approximately 15 pages report of the assignment.


· Template example of the report and information concerning cases can be found at
the MyCourses-portal.
· The report, presentation and the contribution of each group member must be sent
to the peer group one week before the presentation.
Peer group:
• The peer group reviews the assignment report and evaluate the work group’s
presentation.
• The peer group presents their comments and evaluations to the work group in the
student assignment seminar.
• The peer group makes their report and fills the evaluation matrix afterwards.
Student assignment seminars:
· Assignments will be discussed by all groups in the student assignment seminars at
last teaching events (25 + 5 minutes).
Assignment submitting:
• Assignment document which include (i) assignment report, (ii) peer report for the case, and
(iii) case presentation have to be submitted to the responsible teachers and the peer group
via MyCourses before the review of the assignment and the seminar.
• The assignment is valid for attending the written exam till the end of the year 2017.
