Are you ready for the
Scottish Rite Renaissance?
DR. DEARY VAUGHN, 33°, Sovereign Grand Commander
For starters, I have directed Dr. Anthony Stafford, 33°, Grand
Minister of State, for the United Supreme Council, to immedi-
ately institute the formal creation of the Scottish Rite College.
Please take the time to review the upcoming information re-
garding his blueprints for the future of education in Scottish Rite
Freemasonry.
Another major undertaking we will present for the Scottish
Rite is the Scottish Rite College’s Lecture Series that takes
place during the United Supreme Council’s Annual Session. Of
the notable events, the USC will be presenting the Year of the
Lodge of Perfection. It will be a series of lectures and presenta-
tions on the Lodge of Perfection and also include, the introduc-
tion of the Scottish Rite Chat & Chew, which will also facilitate
the Opening and Closing of a Grand Lodge of Perfection with
an immediate Q&A period for the participants.

T his quote by French author Jean Baptiste Alphonse,which
translates to, “The more things change, the more they con-
tinue to be the same thing,” perfectly explains the early his-
tory of Scottish Rite Masonry in the Great State of Georgia.
Over the next few paragraphs I would like to take you on a
journey with me as we explore the origins of the College of
Freemasonry in the Peach State.

“The more things change, the

According to the 1890 French publication, Annuaire
Maconnique Universal, the first person appointed by the
United Supreme Council Southern Jurisdiction to serve as
Deputy for the State of Georgia was Sovereign Grand In-
spector General Colonel James Lewis of Louisiana. SGIG
Lewis was also appointed to serve as Deputy for the states of
Louisiana, Alabama and South Carolina. This appears to be a
very common practice during this period of time, seeing
as our first Grand Master for Georgia, Reverend
James M. Simms, was initially appointed
in 1866, to serve as District Deputy Grand
Master by the Prince Hall Grand Lodge
of Massachusetts for the states of
Georgia, Alabama and Florida.
Colonel James Lewis was born in
Wilkerson County, Mississippi in 1832.
According to the book, Footprints of Black
Louisiana by Norman R. Smith, Colonel Lewis
worked on a steamboat in his youth and his travels
took him to New Orleans. As a result of his travels,
he made New Orleans his home. During the
Civil War, he as well as a few other black men,
petitioned the Union Army to form an all-black Infantry
unit. Colonel Lewis went on to serve as Captain in Com-
pany K of the First Regiment of the Louisiana Native Guards.
